Being philosophical about life choices

I often have this feeling, especially when it comes to my education and career, that maybe I should have done something else (maths, history, economics, medicine, law, whatever) and chosen a different career path. Not because there is one overriding passion, but it be because of something I read or someone I've met.

I try to be philosophical about it. I know it's a bit irrational and pointless. I know if I'd done something else, my entire life might have been different (different DH, different town, whatever), and you read all the time about unhappy doctors or lawyers, or anything, and I'm fairly happy in what I do.

Does anyone else think about this, and find a way of banishing these thoughts?

I try stuff on. By this I mean I start reading in that subject or doing that thing e.g. weekend course or night class. Or visit that place etc. See how I feel about it actually doing it to try to get a feel for whether it would have been a possibility or just a whim.

So far, only carpentry and Rome have been serious contenders. Although maybe Lisbon and Amsterdam. Need more investigation there.

So the two Philosophy degrees were the right choice...
