How much would you pay to get your child's face painted at a festival?

I am a face painter, and have an opportunity to work at a festival. The pitch is £100 per day - I've rarely worked this way before and not for years, the bulk of the work is private bookings for x amount of hours.

What is reasonable?

I would happily pay 2 or 3 pounds without thinking twice. You could also consider festival hair (hair gel into cool shapes and then spray on colour with some glitter spray) and temporary tattoos.

I paid £5 at a school fair so would expect at least that at a London festival. Have you got lots of photos of your work to put on your stall. I don’t think people mind if they see what they’ll get.

HollyGibney · 22/08/2018 13:31

£5. I've never paid less. Most would pay that wouldn't they?

Buzzlightyearsbumchin · 22/08/2018 13:39

I'm nowhere near London at all. Another lady in this area charges £5 a face or £75 an hour for parties and she gets people moaning how expensive it is and isn't very busy.

I charge somewhere between £2 And £3 a face or between 30-35 an hour depending where I am and get lots of business.

Last time I worked a local carnival alone, I worked solidly from 9.30 till 4.00, charged 2.00 for simple designs, 4.00 for intricate ones, 3 for henna tattoos, no chance for break, and cleared 80 quid. Luckily pitch was free. I said next time I'd cut out intricate ones.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 22/08/2018 14:46

London it's definitely £5 if you're good, £2-3 is what you pay for 14 year old at a school fete.
Also quite a few we've been to recently offer glitter tattoos for the same price, the cost might be a bit higher but you save a lot of time so can churn through a lot of them.

I would’ve said a tenner in London and a £1 where I live

amusedbush · 22/08/2018 15:43

I thought £5 before I even read any other replies.

RavenLG · 22/08/2018 15:45

At least £5 for basic up to £8 for more detailed. I’d think you could charge that in London and most wouldn’t bat an eye tbh.
If you do go down the glitter route PLEASE buy eco glitter, plastic glitter is awful and a lot of ethical festivals have started to ban it.
Eco glitter still looks amazing and still lingers for weeks like a bastard

expatinspain · 22/08/2018 15:57

£5

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/08/2018 19:02

Well, I tried negotiating a lower fee and no budging so it's not happening. They want commitment for the whole festival and I'd feel silly parting with £400, when I know zero in terms of how well attended by kids it will be.

Thanks for the opinions though!

Actually - in a similar vein, what would you feel happy with for paying a face painter to come to your child's party?

Have a sneaking feeling I need to revise my pricing.

Don't forget adults get their face bum and tits gittered at these thing it not a child thing ..
So a piss up adult will pay 5 for glitter tanfer. Look up festival faces and cost it out .

MinorRSole · 22/08/2018 19:12

I paid £40 which I thought was really reasonable. The party was about 3 hours but she was really popular and got through the kids in around an hour (some only wanted tattoos though so possibly sped things up). The £40 was for 90 minutes but she got away early as no point in hanging around when they're all done.

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/08/2018 20:01

£40 sounds good, @MinorRSole - what area of the country are you in, approximately?

MinorRSole · 22/08/2018 20:06

I'm in Scotland

Stuckforthefourthtime · 22/08/2018 20:37

In London I'd expect to pay a lot more than £40. My sister hired one for a big party and from memory it was £70-80 for 2 hours and £30 for every hour after. It seems like a lot of face painters work in pairs either to have an entertainer / painter for parties or to be able to paint the faces for more kids at a fair (we've been put off at a few recently when the queues are too long, so this makes sense too). Good luck!

Flapdoodles · 23/08/2018 15:56

I paid £5 for DD to have festival glitter recently - it's a special occasion so I didn't mind paying a bit more than usual.
