(and you’re lovely btw, this isn’t a MIL bashing thread)

I’m coming round tomorrow and said I’m bringing ‘lunch bits’ what am I bringing? I’ve realised I have no idea what this means. Obviously nice bits, not premade sandwiches etc. Salad? Cheese? Nice bread?

Me, MIL, FIL, SIL and two 2 year olds. Confused

No idea Grin

I would assume something towards lunch, but not the whole lunch. And yes a picnicky sort of lunch, not a casserole.

Phone her up again in the morning!

NotTakenUsername · 21/08/2018 23:25

Fresh bread, nice cheeses, hummus, nice deli counter meat, cherry tomatoe... that sort of thing?

BrioLover · 21/08/2018 23:27

Quiche or savoury tart, naice bread, naice ham and cheese, crudités, hummus.

ImNotAsGreenasImCabbageLooking · 21/08/2018 23:29

If you've offered to bring me "lunch bits" I think I'd take that as you're bringing lunch!

As to what lunch might comprise of, well you must have some idea of her likes and dislikes? I'd go with salad, cheese, nice bread, meat if you eat it. Or maybe quiche and salad?

Labradoodliedoodoo · 21/08/2018 23:30

Olives nice cheese crisps cherry tomatoes porkpie fresh bread cucumber

Passingwords · 21/08/2018 23:30

Concentrate on what's she likes and whether she has false teeth or not eg soft roll or a wrap (which is trendier but chewier)
What about nice soft drink fizzy elderflower, just add to normal sandwiches by getting cherry tomatoes, olives, coleslaw, avocado, carrots, peppers so everyone can't pick and mix. For pud do soft fruits and perhaps mini meringue nests with yoghurt

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 21/08/2018 23:36

Yes this sounds about right! SIL is also bringing bits so I know I don’t need to bring it all but I don’t know what she’s bringing. I’m vegetarian, they don’t like olives, SIL doesn’t do mushrooms, MIL doesn’t do avocado, FIL eats everything. I think I’ll go for quiche, bread, some salad, something sweet. Luckily an easy and happy crowd!

Passingwords she’s only 63, no false teeth Smile

Claw of crab; leg of frog; a bleat
of sheep and some cooked bats.

PuntCuffin · 21/08/2018 23:41

My MIL would be bringing half a pint of milk, some past its best cucumber and a couple of slices of stale bread. Mostly she is lovely, but this is one of her oddities.

llangennith · 21/08/2018 23:45

I'm a MIL and I'd like you to call me to find out exactly what I'm bringing. Smile

ohtheholidays · 22/08/2018 02:37

If it had been for my Mum(so my DH taking it)he'd have taken a whole roasted chicken(still hot)a french stick, some real butter, bits for a cesar salad, pasta salad, homemade coleslaw, spicy cous cous salad and some lovely strawberry tarts and something nice to drink.

If it was my MIL(she's really lovely)either my homemade lasagna(she has a very small appetite but ate lots of that the last time I made it for her)and some nice crusty bread and salad or a homemade quiche, some mixed salads and some new potatoes I could cover in butter and fresh mint and a nice cream tea to follow.

I've been raised by foodies Smile

HotTeaCup · 22/08/2018 03:53

I'd ring and ask. If it were me, I would bring a mixed leaves salad with a tub of coleslaw and a tub of potato salad with a nice dressing (kept separately), crusty rolls, quiche, sticks of garlic bread, some crisps and biscuits or a nice cake for dessert.

EyUpOurKid · 22/08/2018 08:17

My dad is 60 and has had false teeth for yeeeeears, he still eat chewy bread rolls etc Grin

Naice ham, lumps of cheese, fresh bread, olives, hummous, salad, some strawberries and cream. Nice crisps. Some eclairs. A quiche. I'd probably make the salad at home so it was ready.

Disclaimer: I'm an over feeder/provider

EyUpOurKid · 22/08/2018 08:18

Fresh, warm rotisserie chicken is an excellent shout also.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2018 08:22

Depends. Just lunch or a celebration lunch? Probably soup and home made bread (but that is my first response to practically everything in life) a big bowl of Caesar salad and strawberries and cream And wine.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 22/08/2018 09:10

Just regular lunch. I see them all the time but would more likely be - doing roast, I’ll bringing pudding, doing bbq, bring veggie bits and sides.

Have text SIL to see what she’s bringing, but definitely a bits and a pieces lunch. My palette is more adventurous so just need to bear that in mind. Was just curious if others would expect the same things I would, and it seems yes Smile
