HELP. The cat caught a bat. It’s alive!

So we have a small bat now in a box, rescued from the cat. Nose to tail 4.5cm long. It’s not dead and doesn’t seem to be injured but certainly stunned.
Any advice on how to help the wee creature is much appreciated.
The first google with mentions of rabies has put the fear of god in me but I suspect it wasn’t a Uk site.

Should add, it was dead. Don’t put a live one in the fridge!!!!

It's been mentioned upthread RE "bad" bacteria in cats' mouths, but I really must stress, if a cat ever catches an animal, even if it looks uninjured always take it to a vet or wildlife hospital to be assessed. Even a tiny nick could cause an infection, leading to a slow death.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 22/08/2018 09:37

Sorry to say this but I know some people who picked up a bat in the UK and had to have a course of rabies injections. Please get some medical advice.

I wouldn't be putting dead bats in my freezer either. My sister has snakes, and stores mice in her freezer (next to the carrots) and it makes me want to vomit.

Sorry to announce the untimely passing of Nora...😢
Got to the vet this morning but she died about an hour later. Feel ridiculously sad about it and have had a stern word with the cats. To be fair it’s the first on they have ever caught! A donation has been made to the Bat Conservation Trust in her memory.

Oh gosh, that’s sad. Sorry to hear this. Cats aren’t usually able to catch such agile creatures so perhaps Nora wasn’t actually in good health to begin with.

You did good by rescuing her and being responsible though.

Ah what a shame.
Glad you went batshit with dcat though!!
Our dcat caught a mouse - news alert dh we lived on a farm - he made 'miu' with heat mat +lamp (our reptile spares) and gathered a selection of tasty mouse morsels together.
Obviously dmouse paseed away - and poor dh was bereft!!
He learned after that - part and parcel of dcat ownership unfortunately.

Septima, I thought that as well. The word “agile” isn’t one often associated with my cats. Bone idle, cuddly and “a bit dim” are much more likely!
