Do you dislike Americans?

Kismett · 21/08/2018 15:07

I feel like I often read posts online that are insulting American people, culture, food, etc. In person people are generally nice to me in the UK, although I do get unsolicited comments about how our chocolate is shit or they'd never want to live in the US. It's not a great feeling, to be honest. But is this how most people really feel?

Pappybear · 21/08/2018 15:08

No. People just feel like they can say shit like that to Americans. It's pretty ignorant.

Grumpasaurus · 21/08/2018 15:09

I wouldn't day I dislike all Americans as individuals, as I have met some Americans I like.

In general though, I find Americans loud and entitled and generally ignorant of the world, though they are also very friendly and keen.

I am Canadian so have travelled to America a lot...

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 21/08/2018 15:10

No but like any group of people, there will be some I don’t like. I generally find them quite pushy (confident?) and a bit overbearing but that’s certainly not all of them.

TroubledLichen · 21/08/2018 15:12

I’m a Brit living in the US, I know heaps of absolutely lovely Americans (although as with every country there are always some twats) and I love living here. Sorry but your chocolate is vile though Grin

Theresnodisneyending · 21/08/2018 15:12

To whom are you referring as "American people"? White Americans? Hispanic? Native Americans? Trump Americans?

Bombardier25966 · 21/08/2018 15:13

I've not personally met an American I disliked.

American chocolate is awful, but I'd never volunteer that fact unless it was relevant to the conversation.

Donald Trump is a vile man, but our PM is little better (if at all). I might make certain assumptions about you if you said you were a Trump voter!

BiggerBoat1 · 21/08/2018 15:14

I have to admit that I judge Americans harshly. I have met some nice, intelligent American people, but I would tend to assume they are arrogant, ignorant about the rest of the world, humourless and generally crass.

I know this is wrong of me. I am answering honestly.

Clairetree1 · 21/08/2018 15:14

Thats a cray question! most of the Americans I know would not even be identifiable as mericans, and many people with American accents are not American,

so ( apart from the fact its a racist question!) how would anyone know if they like or dislike Americans?

butlerswharf · 21/08/2018 15:15

No I don't

SnuggyBuggy · 21/08/2018 15:16

I definitely think us Brits have better chocolate but I've nothing against people in the US.

pallisers · 21/08/2018 15:16

No. People just feel like they can say shit like that to Americans. It's pretty ignorant.

Indeed. Anti-american posts are regarded as normal on MN.

Imagine a thread title

Do you dislike Irish People?
Do you dislike Nigerians?
Do you dislike Asians?

Wouldn't last long.

And this

In general though, I find Americans loud and entitled and generally ignorant of the world, though they are also very friendly and keen.

Cliche 101. Imagine posting "I find the English class-ridden and generally obsessed with getting drunk, though they also have a good sense of humour and can be interesting to chat to"

Coconutcake0 · 21/08/2018 15:21

Not at all. But i do lle ath their drawl and high pitch voices. But I also dislike many other accents too.

Coconutcake0 · 21/08/2018 15:21

Loathe i mean!

pallisers · 21/08/2018 15:22

But i do lle ath their drawl and high pitch voices.

I know. That James Earl Jones is the worst.

Seniorschoolmum · 21/08/2018 15:23

No, I dislike aspects of the American culture, like their obsession with guns and their weird views on abortion. And my ex-boss’s conviction that she was entitled to call me at midnight.
But I’m sure there are things they don’t like about Uk culture My ex boss hated rural British roads and the way people drove close to each other. And never quite got her head around the way I took ALL my holiday regardless of her opinion, because it was in my contract.
And no, a Hershey Bar has nothing to do with chocolate.

KoshaMangsho · 21/08/2018 15:24

No. But I now live in America. I have many friends and family including many with an American accent. So not I am neither judgemental of the country as a whole or of their accent. This is a bizarre thread.

CraftyGin · 21/08/2018 15:24

My children, DH, and extended family are American, so I don’t hate them.

But the chocolate is undeniably s**t.

glintandglide · 21/08/2018 15:24

No, I think American culture is hugely underrated due to the British propensity to dismiss anything American as “silly”

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 21/08/2018 15:24

I love Americans as a whole.

So much chattier and less aloof than us Brits.

SeaViewBliss · 21/08/2018 15:25

Not as a whole nation, no.

I have met many Americans I liked very much, I didn't come across anyone who wasn't delightful when I travelled there.

Anyone who genralises is bonkers.

ZigZagZebras · 21/08/2018 15:26

I don't like a lot of the culture and definitely wouldn't want to live there, but individuals are individuals. I'm sure there's the same percentage of nice people there as the UK.

Trump managing to get voted in did lower my opinion of a larger amount of the populations intelligence or morals though.

Kismett · 21/08/2018 15:27

Sorry @KoshaMangsho (love the username), I probably could have found a better way to word it. I've had a few negative encounters recently and was probably feeling a bit too sorry for myself.

OP posts:
KoshaMangsho · 21/08/2018 15:27

And as a naturalised Brit who is now an immigrant to America, my god yes, the Americans are on the whole MUCH nicer and much easier to befriend than British people were at first. I have lived 3 times in America, in my teens, mid 20s and now late 30s. I have lived in four different cities on the two coasts and in the middle of the country.

I find Americans on the whole much more religious and devout, I find that they don’t ‘get’ British irony and humour, I find that generally they are more hard working, and a lot friendlier. These are the broadest of generalisations.

Grumpasaurus · 21/08/2018 15:28

@pallisers it may be a cliche, but it's also an accurate portrayal of my experience with the Americans I have met- they are very friendly and very keen to connect, but, also very ignorant of the rest of the world and have a sense of entitlement about them I have never witnessed in any other culture.

Bear in mind I am mostly referring to white, heterosexual, middle-class Americans rather than any of the minority ethnic or demographic groups.

I have worked and studied and travelled with Americans- and to many parts of America- and that is my genuine experience.

KoshaMangsho · 21/08/2018 15:28

No the OP isn’t bizarre. It’s the responses that are just bizarre. And probably demonstrating what the OP meant.
