After seeing a thread a few weeks ago about mosquito larvae swimming in some water that had a child's toy in, its got me wondering what these things are that have appeared in my pond today. Are they tadpoles or are they mosquitos?

The pond filter hasn't been on for a while as we've had our garage demolished so there has been no power outside, which probably makes the pond a perfect place for these things, whatever they are.

So wise And knowledgable MN, please advise what they are!

Hi, definitely not tadpoles. Look like mosquito larvae as you suggest

MrsRubyMonday · 21/08/2018 13:29

Hard to see clearly but look like tadpoles to me.

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 21/08/2018 13:35

Definitely mosquito larvae, they love any standing water.

LARLARLAND · 21/08/2018 13:36

Surely it’s the wrong time of year for tadpoles?

paap1975 · 21/08/2018 13:36

Mosquito larvae. It's not the right time of year for tadpoles

Figmentofimagination · 21/08/2018 13:39

I was worried it was mosquito larvae. If we drain the pond and clean it will that get rid of them?

I live in Africa and those look just like mosquito larvae. Sorry.

EnchantersNightshade · 21/08/2018 13:41

Yep, def mozzy larvae. We have tons too Sad

As PP says, wrong time of year for taddies. They're April/May

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2018 13:41

Mosquito larvae. Get some fish :)

EnchantersNightshade · 21/08/2018 13:41

You need to move some predators in Grin

SupposedStudent · 21/08/2018 13:42

Irrelevant, but tadpole is a really really weird word.

Figmentofimagination · 21/08/2018 14:16

Enchanters we do have a few frogs that love living in our pond and underneath our plants, but obviously they aren't doing their job well enough.

Tadpoles are 10 x the size of mosquito larvae- would you measure them in mm if so mosquito larvae.

sparklyllama · 21/08/2018 14:50

Far far to late for tadpoles.

WhyDidIEatThat · 21/08/2018 14:54

Just put oil on top, like vegetable oil.

Grasslands · 21/08/2018 15:04

Time to plan an excursion and discover what tadpoles look like never too late.

Beamur · 21/08/2018 15:05

You will always get these in a pond, unless you have something in the pond, like a fish, to eat them. No point draining your pond, they will appear again.
Is it suitable for fish? If not, look up how you could encourage diversity in a wildlife pond.

AdaColeman · 21/08/2018 15:08

Far too late in the year for tadpoles, you see them in the spring.

Permaexhaustion · 21/08/2018 15:08

Kids fishing net, scoop from surface and dispose?
And repeat

DoneDisappeared · 21/08/2018 15:09

Oil or small fish

MrsRubyMonday · 21/08/2018 17:13

Duh it's been so hot I didn't even think of the time of year. Yeah definitely too late for tadpoles. Ignore previous comment..

BringOnTheScience · 21/08/2018 17:20

Former freshwater biologist here ...
Def mosquito larvae!

Looks v green. Do you have aeration running in warm weather (eg a fountain) or has that been off too? In this hot weather all you'll have is warm water with v v little oxygen. Of v little use to any life beyond what can tolerate poor conditions. No wonder you've got mozzies.

Please don't put oil on it unless you want to make it worse.

Sort out some aeration & the filter, then consider getting some fish in. 😀

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 21/08/2018 17:23

@SupposedStudent

How about Kaulquappe then?

ALongHardWinter · 21/08/2018 17:44

Far too late in the year for tadpoles. They are around in spring/early summer.

gamerchick · 21/08/2018 17:47

Why would you drain the pond? Confused they're not doing any harm.
