Advice re job offer

PipLongStockings · 21/08/2018 12:30

I applied (after over a year of searching) and was successful for a job which will involve 50% work and 50% university. The uni is around 25 miles away but driving towards London so will easily be 1 hour travel.
In the interview I discussed where I lived and the location of where I would be based for work- was assured I would be placed locally.
Yesterday, I was called and told that instead of being placed "locally" they have allocated me to inside the M25- 35 miles away.
I think start time is 9am and I have childcare at 8am; there is no way I can get there and even leaving home earlier will probably be useless as the roads (motorways) are gridlocked daily.
WTF! There are no other jobs, this one I felt finally fit in with my family and childcare but I feel screwed over. Have contacted multiple people and they say that is the only place with a position available, no other option.
Just venting really, I either take on the additional stress/travel/childcare costs/lack of family time or withdraw application?

Sounds unworkable and unbelievably frustrating. Is there any way you can agree a flexible start time to allow for your childcare needs? Can you look to move closer on a temporary basis? Can you pay extra for early starts at the childcare?

If it has taken a year to get this opportunity it sounds like you have to try everything you can to make this work before you decide to withdraw.

Is that the closest place to your home and therefore they class it as local? I would write to them and state the names and occasions where you were assured you would be based locally and ask why after multiple such assurances you have been made a rather different offer? Keep it factual and unemotional.

Frankly, if they want you, they should honour what they have discussed with you.

I would try and change the placements. Explain your circumstances and beg for flexibility-if you have been offered the job they obviously want you.
Also, childcare is available from 7 with most childminders, and kids clubs I know start at 7 30.
Would the train not be viable?
Would it not be at least worth trying different childcare and giving it, say, a year, after which it may lead to other things more suitable anyway?

Can you get childcare nearer work or an earlier start? Are your working hours flexible?

Frankly, if they want you, they should honour what they have discussed with you.

If this is a graduate/ undergraduate training scheme, they'll have reserves ready to take the OP's place. None of us are indispensable.

OP ask about flexibility in starting time, and look at other childcare options.

PipLongStockings · 21/08/2018 16:28

Children are at school, childcare is breakfast and after school club and times are 8-5.30 no early or late options.
Train is 2 lines going into London and tube so would take just as long if not more.
May ask if I can negotiate working hours, maybe have a working lunch.

Cant you get a minder? They are often cheaper mine does 7-6 xx

FatCow2018 · 21/08/2018 18:49

Yes scrap breakfast and after school club and use a CM instead. All the ones round here take them from 7am to 7.30pm. My MIL is one and has one mindee come at 6.40.

PipLongStockings · 22/08/2018 10:16

No childminders do their school run as it is a little village school. They do the larger 1 mile further 3 form school!

I still stand by what I said - nothing to do with being indispensable: it's shitty of an employer to do this.
