Where would you look for a tutor?

My husband is a qualified primary teacher going part time this year (trying to reduce the stress a bit) and we are looking into other job options including him tutoring.

Where have you looked/found a tutor? There seem to be hundreds of different sites, some charging commission, others are just adverts, and we weren't really sure where to start!

Any other helpful advice gratefully received! What do you specifically look for or avoid?

My nephews both used a tutor and went on local recommedation. They used a retired local teacher too. Im guessing she said she was doing it and word went around.

We also have access here to grammar schools and parents use tutors for the entrance exams, 11 plus I think. That may be another market available depending on where you live.

Yes he would include 11+ as we have a number of grammar schools in the area. I suppose it's getting started that's tricky sometimes.

We used a website called Tutorhunt.

I've put postcards up in local shops with no response, though about to try again for the new academic year. I got much better response to advertising on a local town gossip page on Facebook. I'm considering village newsletters in the area but haven't tried that yet. I am in a very rural village and not allowed to drive at the moment so any pupils need to come to me which limits the numbers interested. Tutoring has reminded me why I wanted to teach - fun without the levels of stress and paperwork.

Word of mouth, Facebook or FirstTutors website

Bin85 · 21/08/2018 08:17

Once established word of mouth is enough plus an occasional post on local Facebook group or advert in parish magazine.

Recommendation from other parents

I emailed DD's form tutor and asked her if she could recommend anyone.

I used MyTutor after a MN free trial. Worked well for us, but no idea what they’re like to work for - and because it’s got a star based review system I suspect it might be hard to break into from scratch.
