Thyroxine...morning or night?

MrsJamieFraser2 · 20/08/2018 22:31

I've been advised that it's most effective in the morning, but I find it so much easier to remember to take when I go to bed.

Does it really make that much of a difference?

I was told to take it on an empty stomach! Usually 4 hours since you last ate. Depending on when you have tea and go to bed could work? Or leave it beside the kettle so you remember to take it in the morning before making your coffee or whatever?

BrownJenkins · 20/08/2018 22:37

Much better taken first thing in the morning.

Wetwashing00 · 20/08/2018 22:37

I’ve heard it depends when you last ate something.
And I’ve seen people Discuss the effect caffeine has on the thyroxine.

I usually take mine the minute I open my eyes In the morning, or if I get up for a wee really early.
Luckily my Son is a very early riser so he’s my alarm clock at the moment. But it’s always too early to get up properly so I usually have my first coffee about an hour later.

Some people find it works better for them at night. Personally I find it makes no difference.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 20/08/2018 22:38

I was advised to take it when it suited me but at the same time each day.

I take mine first thing in the morning, with a cup of tea. My consultant confirmed that as long as I do this every day it's fine.

MrsJamieFraser2 · 20/08/2018 22:41

It's a minefield! I know if I take it at night I'm almost 99% certain to take it. Maybe I should just leave them by the kettle, but then my doctor advised 30 minutes before caffeine too Confused

I've never been told 30 mins before caffeine! So many different bits of random info! I always take mine when I go to the loo in the morning then make myself a huge strong coffee. My bloods are always fine so hopefully not doing any damage!

FluffyMcCloud · 20/08/2018 22:52

I was told morning and leave 30mins til food or caffeine. I tried taking them at night so I could have my cup of coffee the second I wake up but it made me feel terrible

DaisyDreaming · 21/08/2018 02:10

Mine says morning but I tried taking it at night after reading a study about it being more effective when taken at night. I now take it in the morning, I always forget the empty stomach bit and take it with breakfast

Broken11Girl · 21/08/2018 03:34

Morning. Your body would naturally produce more thyroxine first thing.

sleepymouse · 21/08/2018 03:53

Taking consistently the same way each day is most important - the dosage will be adjusted to your body to give you appropriate TSH levels. I take mine at night

FattyMa · 21/08/2018 07:30

Tried night but made me feel worse and very fatigued. Morning suits me better around 6am a good one to two hours away from breakfast and other medications. Guess what works for one doesn't work for another.

vampirethriller · 21/08/2018 07:34

I take mine first thing in the morning with a cup of tea an hour before breakfast, I was told it should be taken on an empty stomach

Sofabitch · 21/08/2018 07:38

I keep mine on the bedside table and they are the first thing I do when I wake. Then by the time I have showered etc I can have breakfast.

I usually take my multi vitamin before bed. But I'm much worse at remembering tablets in the evening.

As long as your blood tests are fine and you feel fine I guess it doesn't matter when you take the tablet.

You Are supposed to avoid any positively charged ions....ie calcium iron etc 2 hours either side of the thyroxine as they bind and reduce the absorption. So that is milk in tea/coffee/cereal etc

But so long as you've always done that and your tests are in range you will be absorbing enough

KateMcD451 · 21/08/2018 07:40

I take mine in the evening OP before bed because my GP advised to take it on an empty stomach and leave 30 mins before eating as calcium? affects the thyroxine's absorption and my mornings are such that I don't have time to be planning like this around my breakfast where I'm also always consuming calcium in some form or another. I am sure as long as you're consistently taking it every day it's fine.

Never been told the caffeine bit, anyone else been told about not taking with calcium. Thyroid information is so poor imo.

Violetroselily · 21/08/2018 07:50

I too was told to take it in the morning on an empty stomach at least 30 mins before any drink, food or other medication

Violetroselily · 21/08/2018 07:50

And to take it with a decent amount of water, not just a mouthful to swallow

dingdang · 21/08/2018 08:03

I take mine at 6 am with a full glass of water then wait 30 minutes before black coffee. I don't eat breakfast till I get to work so not till 8.30. I do take all my other supplements at the same time though.., hadn't thought that they may impact the absorption.

Sofabitch · 21/08/2018 08:10

Iron calcium and magnesium are the main supplements to avoid. If you take a total calcium supplements or iron tablets thwre should be a full 4 hours either side

LittleCandle · 21/08/2018 08:12

I always take it in the morning, because if I take it any later than that, I can't sleep at night. I take it first thing, then make my coffee, so perhaps 5 minutes between drugs and coffee. My bloods are always fine, even if I am symptomatic and I have been taking them that way for the last 22 years. DD2 has just been put on a very low dose and was told to take them in the morning.
