Pure essential oils

I got a humidifier after DS(17weeks) had a horrible cold and the wonderful people of MN suggested putting baby olbus oil in one.

Well I love it and he's over his cold now so was wondering if anyone could recommend any oils as the smell of olbus is getting a bit samey.

I'm really interested in the benefits of the oils (not sure I believe in it but they still smell nice and can't hurt!)

I've not been able to research into what oils there are, of they're okay to put in a humidifier with a baby in the room. I like we stress ones and ones that are antibacterial / fight off colds / deter bugs etc.

Also on a bit of a budget but want to get some good stuff. Can anyone recommend where to buy?

Excuse typos!!

I like anti stress ones**

But I should add, I'd give any ago!! They're all supposed to have different benefits I think - I just don't know what they are!!!

Maybe try lavender? I get recommended this all the time as I think it has a 'feel good' factor.

the Body Shop do some really nice oils that are about £4 each xx

Hello, first thing to remember is that just a very few drops are good for baby as he's so little, just 3 or 4 drops combined (not each).

Nice ones are: lavender (my all time favourite, great for stress, supposed to send you to sleep), camomile (German or Roman - combined with lavender this is lovely, also good for stress), eucalyptus (quite antiseptic, smells a bit like Vicks!), tea tree (a bit of an acquired taste but very antiseptic), bergamot (smells like Earl Grey tea, nice to cheer you up), frankincense (expensive but lovely, good for stress and respiratory, I'd be inclined to just use one drop of this in a blend), cedarwood (good for chestiness, I'd be inclined to only use one drop of this though), spearmint, lemon, orange. There are lots of others but they're not generally recommended for children under 6. If you want to read up more there is a lovely book, Essential Oil Safety, by Robert Tisserand (he founded the company).

I used to get my oils at Holland and Barrett but I was in there today and they seem to have got pretty expensive - if you're happy to order online there are lots of sources. Some good advice I was given by an aromatherapy teacher years ago to see if an oil is pure/essential or not is to put one drop on a piece of paper - if it evaporates completely in a few hours it's definitely pure. If you search for "aromatherapy oils" essential on google it should bring up some good special offers for you.

Hope this helps!

If you look at Neil's yard ... they do blends .... not a bad price ... and pure ...

Thanks so much for your replies, really appreciate it!

Canny my humidifier is a 450ml one, would you still recommend 1 or two drops? It's also on the side next to the baby's crib (can move it though)

So far (in my Amazon basket) I've gone for the 'Fresh Skin' Frankincense and lavender ones. They seem for be a couple of pounds each on there and have good reviews.

Try a mix of rose geranium, chamomile and bergamot for destressing. Sweet orange, grapefruit and lemon for mood lifting, lavender, chamomile and sandalwood for sleep, lavender, peppermint and frankincense if you are headachey/feeling a bit below par, oregano, thyme and grapefruit for antibac/viral and camphor, eucalyptus and tea tree if you are snuffly.

Lessstressedhemum · 21/08/2018 08:54

I should have said, if you're using them near the baby, only use a tiny wee drop. you shouldn't really use more than a 1% diution of oils anyway, but for a baby you need to use a lot less. You will probably only need 5 or 6 drops in total for a 450ml humidifier.

sirlee66 · 21/08/2018 10:30

Oh no! I've been using loads of the baby olbus oil in it, like 30 drops cause I couldn't smell it otherwise!!! Oh god do you think the baby is ok!? He seems okay!!

We love Neom ones. The smells are amazing and they last for hours after you've finished with them 😍

cannycat20 · 21/08/2018 14:12

I'm sure he'll be fine - especially if it's the Baby Olbas oil you've been using! As Lessstressed said, 5-6 drops should be plenty in the diffuser.

Lessstressedhemum · 21/08/2018 14:14

He will be fine, don't worry. Just use a tiny bit from now on.

I recommended this selection on another thread. I've tried a few different brands but I find these the best.

Be careful if you have pets OP, both cats and dogs can be severely allergic to many of the common EO scents that people use, and they aren't recommended around pets at all generally. Tea tree for example is bad for both, anything citrus isn't good for cats. There's lists online.

You haven't said, so if you don't have any, nothing to worry about. But if you do, be careful!

sirlee66 · 21/08/2018 16:16

Oh god I have a cat and a dog! Dog sleeps in the room with us!!!

A starting point for reading. I know a few people who have noticed pets being lethargic after using tea tree or lemon. I always used lemon myself before I knew the dangers.
