MIL has been caught speeding (35 in a 30) and has chosen to go on the driving awareness course next week rather than points on her licence. She is now convinced that they are going to supervise her driving around for 3 hours and take her licence off her if she isn't up to scratch. Has anyone ever been on one of these courses? What should she expect?

For info - she was caught in an area where the speed limit was 40 until 6 months ago when it was changed to 30 - she didn't realise this. It's entirely her fault, she knows this as there were signs etc., she was happily pootling along thinking she was going under the speed limit. She is distraught and 'feels like a criminal'.

Why are they "bastards" for setting up a speed trap, @mouseyblonde?

I did one about 6 years ago and had a morning in the classroom and afternoon in the car with an instructor. DH and D Sis have done them since without being scrutinised so maybe it's changed or maybe it was a different police jurisdiction or something, I'm not sure.

It's changed. DH had to do one including driving quite a few years ago, he said it was rather 'feel like a criminal' . I had to do one last year, it was fine, one or two useful things I didn't know.

It's the people caught doing 40/50 in a 30 zone that need this sort of course too, or maybe a harder hitting one.

They really should have to do the course in addition to the fine and points.

I went on one a couple of months ago, speed awareness. Was half a day in a hotel conference room, very amiable presenters, good camaraderie and genuinely a very interesting course. I came out feeling confident.

I did one two years ago (I'm 50) - and was the second youngest by a country mile! (The youngest, a bloke in his mid-30s, had also been on one for speeding on his bicycle - we all clapped at that achievement Blush)

Tell her not to worry is a slow death by PowerPoint type afternoon

Dog walker has just come back from a walk. Apparently NDN was taking photos out of her bedroom window Hmm

RayneDance · 21/08/2018 15:26

I find it strange though, the two people I know who went on one are actually amazing safe drivers who for the first time ever had small slip up. One friend was a few mph over and literally one slip up.

Yet bat shit crazy people I know just remember to slow down for the cameras

Dog walker must have been really moving to be put on a speed awareness course Grin

If a dog breaks the speed limit is the owner liable?

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/08/2018 15:34

You're legally responsible for the actions of your dog, but not your cat, so if you are going to have speeding pets, get cats not dogs.

😂😂😂 I posted in the wrong thread! Sorry folks

WilburIsSomePig · 21/08/2018 16:42

@lineylane I have to say thank you as my lovely MIL is so worked up about this course and you've just given her (and me) a good laugh. Grin

It's a bit of a fundraiser for the local authorities as the course fee goes to them whereas they would not see any income from a speeding fine.
That said, the one I went on was very informative and entertaining. It makes you wonder if we would all be better off having a refresher every few years.
My course was run by driving instructors, they said the police used to run them but after a spate of people accidentally 'dobbed themselves in' (spouses taking the rap for partners speeding) and getting arrested whilst on the course, the numbers taking the course dropped off. As the driving instructors are not law enforcement, they can turn a deaf ear to any accidental disclosures by the attendees!
