DD made a rainbow cake (not at all 'stealth' boast)

She's been talking about it for the whole summer holidays and she finally made one (with the help of our au pair). Both she and the au pair have sworn never to do it again, it's a LONG process, especially when you can only fit two cake tins in the oven at a time. It looks good though.

Don't worry about my au pair, he's fine. It's quite a cushy position with us so we often have outgoing au pairs recommending us to their friends.

It's a good thing you can't hear the jokes about 'being careful with this one because one dead au pair looks like an accident, but by the third or fourth it's starting to look suspicious'. We are a very dark-humoured family. Grin

My dm bought us a kit from hobbycraft. Fucking hell it was tedious to make, but very tasty though

Glad to hear it OP.

Too many people think au pairs are not employees and don't even pay them minimum wage and don't register as employers etc.

A dark humored family that pay properly, employ legally and appreciate cake would certainly be a good posting.

My DS has to make a cake not cook a meal apparently or do anything remotely healthyfor his summer homework, so I might suggest this one! Well done OP's DD. Is Junior bake off still on? I've only seen repeats.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 21/08/2018 14:11

raisedbyguineapigs If you have the MN cookbook, the brownies recipe in that is fabulous. DD can make it all by herself after making it a couple of times with help. Totally delicious and moreish.

Oh I have got it! He said it has to be a decorated cake but that seems like weirdly specific homework!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 21/08/2018 18:34

A little bit of buttercream or fudge icing and some buttons and sprinkles should do for decoration. They're not expecting Choccywoccydoodah levels are they?

There's also a chocolate party cake in the book that looks pretty good, although DD hasn't tried it yet.

That's brilliant OP. You have inspired me to make it with dd this weekend.

Dd10 also is into baking in a big way. I’m so sick of cakes and biscuits! She has HFA ASD and I do understand that this is therapeutic and probably in some way addressing a sensorial need - just sick of the mess and calories. Anyway, I’ve moved her onto no-knead bread and it’s really brilliant and useful and less messy! She’s following a YouTube video, Jenny cooks, and we are building up to the NY times no-knead sourdough!

I’ve also just purchased a pasta making machine. Good tip for anyone with baking-obsessed kids but sick of the cakes around the house!
