Rapid weight loss 8 mo post partum

This is not a stealth boast I promise!

I gained a huge amount of weight with my pregnancy, 15kg. In the first 7 months I was only able to shift 5kg despite eating well and exercising. In the past month I’ve lost another 5kg. That’s right - 5kg in one month! I was on holiday for 2 weeks of that eating ice cream and cake so it’s deifnitely not diet.

Is this some sort of hormonal adjustment? Anyone else experience it? I’m worried about any more rapid weight loss as I’m still breastfeeding.

How are you feeling in yourself, well otherwise?

eeanne · 20/08/2018 14:17

I feel pretty good overall. No other indication that I’m unwell. It’s baffling.

I’ve been experiencing the same. I gained 17kg during pregnancy, I am 8 months PP, still breastfeeding and to date I have lost 25kg. I went to see my GP and they ordered a full blood count, tests for liver, kidney and thyroid function plus a chat around my general health and well being. All tests back completely normal, Dr assumes it’s down to a busy lifestyle, healthy food and breastfeeding.
Post partum thyroiditis could be one explanation.
I would go and see your GP even if you feel well, there’s no harm.

We're you walking a lot more on holiday, being more active, sightseeing?

I had twins, I was huge, looking back at photos I don't even recognise myself. I got married when they were 10 months old and by then I was my normal size (8.5-9 stone) it just dropped off and I didn't diet or do anything differently. I think your body just goes back to realising it can be normal (your normal) again.

I'd also see the GP for a chat, it's probably nothing but I am a cautious sort and would want a blood test.

Get your thyroid checked

eeanne · 20/08/2018 14:43

Thanks. I do have a thyroid condition and my tests from a few months back were normal. I had it checked then because I thought I’d become hypo since the weight wasnt shifting. I will get another check to see if something has changed. Hadn’t heard of post partum thyroiditis.

The holiday was maybe a bit more walking but a LOT more food and much unhealthier than normal. My mum saw a photo of me and said I looked like I’d lost a lot of weight. Didn’t think I could have but hopped on the scale when we got home and was shocked.

I wonder if our children will ever appreciate what we put our bodies through for them!

I think this sounds normal if you’re still bf. The calorie needs of your child have gone up and feeding may be more frequent with teething/separation anxiety? I definitely experienced this. Are you making time to eat properly? Not just grabbing stuff when you have 5 seconds?! If you’re eating to appetite and you’re feeling otherwise well I wouldn’t worry.

This happened to me when DS was 8/9 months- he started walking and I honestly barely sat down! The weight just fell off. Sadly I put most of it back on againBlush

Thyroid flare ups after birth are really common, either into hypo or hyper.
