Can anyone recommend a good how-babies-are-made book for a 6 year old?

(I'm talking about sex education - not a request for erotic literature for myself!)

DS is 6yo and very inquisitive, and I'm amazed he hasn't asked the big question yet, but it's only a matter of time, and I'd like to be armed with something to help me talk it through with him. I've had a look on Amazon, and there are surprisingly few, and a lot of them seem to be just about pregnancy.

DS is well clued up on pregnancy, he just doesn't know about conception. And while I'm happy to kick off with "it begins with a sort of special cuddle", I need to follow up with some proper substantial biological facts, because the boy just will not be fobbed off. Once I start, he's going to be asking question after question.

Any recommendations, anyone?

My 3.5 year old has already asked the big question! I told him that mummy has eggs in her tummy and daddy gave mummy some seed and they made him. Yesterday he asked how he got out of my tummy.... Arrgghhhh!!!

Where Willy Went is meant to be good, my friend used it with her twins.

Smile DS once tried to re-enact the birth by squeezing through my legs when I was standing in the kitchen trying to chop vegetables. Confused

Thanks haverhill. I saw Where Willy Went and thought it might be a bit sniggery but gets good reviews so maybe I'll give it a go.

Mummy laid an egg by Babbette Cole. DD read it when she was about that age.

Magair · 20/08/2018 19:31

Can you not tell him? Why would a book be needed, genuinely?

Mummy Laid an Egg by Babette Cole

Magair using books works well because children usually like sitting down reading a book with their mum or dad and won't get distracted by other things rather than a "let's sit down and talk" moment where they are likely to end up wandering off.

BlueBrush · 20/08/2018 20:04

magair I could definitely just tell him, but i just know that we'll quickly get to the point that he wants more detail than I can manage without diagrams, and I'm trying to avoid me having to rely on Google images, because I'm not sure where that will lead!

Oh OK. I've haven't done a sit down and talk moment about sex, seems a bit portentous? Just casually answered questions as they've come up and that's worked great for us. He's 6.5 and knows how it all works.

Where willy went

Mummy laid an egg

How did I begin. This one is really good as a follow on from the other two.

I like usborne - how your body works. Found it easy to read and understand for my dd

mycelialnetwork · 20/08/2018 20:25

Amazing You is quite good. Talks about puberty and how babies are made without being too graphic.

TrappedByATurtle · 20/08/2018 20:28

There's a purple book, Let's talk (about babies?) . Not quite sure of title and it's in DC's room at the moment.

Thanks everyone!
