London Dungeon?

Hello! I'm taking DP and DS to London this week, and I'd like us to visit the London Dungeon. I've just had a quick look at it will cost almost £80 for the three of us; that's OK, in the sense that we've not had a holiday this year, nor will we, so this is sort of our one-day-only break; but I want it to be something that won't stop being fun for 7 year old DS after just an hour or something.

I'd like to visit the Planetarium at Greenwich for a show at 16:15, and the Dungeon wants us to confirm the time of our visit at the time of booking.

Can anyone advise - is there enough to keep DS entertained here for a few hours? Or is it a bit of a rip-off? Thank you!

At that age on trips to London my kids loved the science museum and natural history museum, the aquarium, London Eye and the Zoo (which has also changed since I last went at 12 and is just fantastic these days)

Took my nine year old last week (posted asking for advice about this few weeks ago!) .

It was quite 'jumpy', but he absolutely loved it. He's not easily scared though. I found it very interesting. Also the cable cars were really good fun, though that he was didn't leave go of my hand on that one 😂

There is lots to do in Greenwich if you want to make a day of it there - my 7 year old enjoys the (free) Maritime Museum which has several interactive areas for children, as well as the amazing view from the top of the hill in Greenwich Park (and running down the hill at terrifying speed). If you do want to explore a different area of London as well, our current favourite is the Wonderlab at the Science Museum which is brilliant for 7 year olds - lots to keep them engaged for hours and very reasonable especially if you can make use of the annual pass. Quite easy to then get the underground from South Kensington to Blackfriars for example, followed by a boat to Greenwich in the afternoon.

We did the Dungeons at Easter. My DC were 10 and just-turned 8. They were fine, but I found the whole thing pretty boring. Nothing like it used to be. You go from room to room in a group with actors telling you about different parts of London's grisly past. We had Merlin passes, no way is it worth the entrance fee.

We're going to the Planetarium next week. Kids loved the Cutty Sark, so you could combine those.

If you're in Greenwich then I would really recommend this. DD (9) and myself (38) both loved it.

The parks and free museums in Greenwich are great, as is getting the Thames Clipper. If you're travelling by train the Clipper is 2 for 1.

Hi op...we went to the planetarium show last week...it was really good and my 7 year old loved it! If you're in Greenwich, I'd opt for a boat trip down the Thames too...My dc enjoyed that.

London Dungeons have a 'Guardian Angel' tour for young children that is a lot more toned down.

LockedOutOfMN · 20/08/2018 00:45

We went to the London Dungeon (on the South Bank) in March this year. It's a guided tour that takes 90 minutes. After that, you go to a gift shop which is also a pub. So unless you want to look around the gift shop or stay for drinks, then it takes 90 minutes. You can't stay in the Dungeons part after your tour finishes.

Feltcushion · 20/08/2018 00:59

It is 2 for 1 with cadbury packs- £1 at tesco

Rebecca36 · 20/08/2018 01:50

There's nothing 'fun' about the London Dungeon, especially not for a child so young.

PurpleCrowbar · 20/08/2018 02:24

I've done school trips to LD (as part of a weekend with a theatre trip).

It's quite well done, but it's definitely a different experience from years ago when you used to mooch about the exhibits. Very much a guided tour - you're in a group & get bounced from one room to the next, with actors keeping things going.

My youngest is 10 & she'd definitely find it too much. It's quite gory! Silly, but nonetheless gruesome. I've had at least one year 7 kid bail every time.

Natural History Museum? 😉

Just a quick message of thanks to everyone who replied. We decided to do a couple of days in London next half term (missing the Dungeon) and spent today in Greenwich instead. We did the Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory and Planetarium. It was awesome! I shall revisit this thread to remind myself of all your tips and suggestions prior to our October outing.

Thank you again!

Sounds great. Glad you had a good time.

The London Dungeon is pretty boring in my opinion. Madam Tussauds is way better.

Mari50 · 24/08/2018 13:04

I took my dd to the London dungeon when she was 7 ( she was desperate to see it and I caved), we had to be rescued almost immediately ......
