Getting wee smell out of a mattress

FuckyDuzz · 19/08/2018 16:04

None of my kids have ever wet the bed past toilet training stage (when I had waterproofs on) so I’m a bit lost

DD wet the bed last night and I’ve scrubbed and scrubbed and sprayed and sprayed and her mattress still stinks!
I only bought her a new one a month ago 😩

How do I get the smell out?
please don’t say buy a new one

I used Febreze on mine when DD had an accident and that seemed to clear it. I have a King Size bed with a waterproof mattress protector on it, for the times when DD is in it with me as she has been sick a couple of times, and also wet it once.

Just found this online

White vinegar and bicarbonate of soda - can't recall in what order (maybe google first) but the acid in the vinegar neutralises the smell.

I've used this potion before on a dog wee accident and it got the smell out Smile

Pet enzyme cleaner like Simple Solution. Seems more effective than vinegar mix.

Pet urine eliminator spray - sold with the carpet cleaning bits in places like b and q

ChellySmuff · 19/08/2018 16:37

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled on then hoovered off a few hours later

We've successfully brought a peed in mattress back to like new by spraying the whole thing liberally with peroxide till it's wet, then sprinkle over with bicarbonate of soda to cover it all. Leave overnight & then Hoover thoroughly. It will be dry, look clean & be disinfected

I mix a little apple cider vinegar with clothes detergent and water, put in a spray bottle and spray all over the patch. Blot with kitchen roll then repeat. I then had to leave the mattress til it dried which took a couple of days, and meant I slept on temporary bed but it was worth it as matters doesn't smell

YY to pet wee spray, followed by bicarb left on liberally then hoovered off.

The pet stuff can also be bought in pet shops. Has enzymes that treat the stinky bacteria I think. Worked for me on a urine soaked parental mattress!

Shaving foam - works wonders!

Agree with PP's. Pet enzyme spray from pets at home (get the one that foams as opposed to just the spray as it will go deeper and hold the nozzle on the mattress) work in for a long time with a slightly damp cloth, cover in bicarb, again work it in so it absorbs then sprinkle more, leave to dry with the window open all day, then once totally dry, hoover and do the other side. Best if you leave it to dry out properly so put her somewhere else for a night or so.

Thankyou so much, so many ideas!
I really should’ve posted before the shops shut though 🤦🏻‍♀️
