Healthy eating-what do you eat when you fancy cake/chocolate please?

When the wether turns I always fancy a nice bit of cake or chocolate with a cup of tea.... I’m trying to stop processed/high sugar stuff and lose half a stone. What do you teach for that’s healthy when you want cake please?

I didn't mention them because I didn't previously post about them, Rapid. But yes, it is possible to eat them in very small quantities and still have a pretty healthy diet.

HazelBite · 19/08/2018 15:22

A jaffa cake 45 cals, or an "Options" hot chocolate drink (or similar brand) instead of the tea, drunk slowly and savoured 30-40 cals.

I find a banana and one of those choc drinks vey filling as an snack.

RapidlyGoingMad · 19/08/2018 15:23

Apologies slow didn't see you it was you that posted about the truffle, I thought you were just replying generally Blush

I agree about the cocoa btw, just thought it was a bit odd that they were the responses when the OP explicitly asked for stuff that wasn't high sugar or processed as was looking to lose weight.

Anyway, don't want to derail!

Thank you! Thanks, I’m after something something that I can eat when I have a cup of tea when I really want a bit of cake or chocolate that isn’t high in sugar or highly processed as I’m trying to be healthier and shift half a stone.

Currently going for a nakd bar, the cocoa one. Obviously they are processed but no added sugar in them, they are hitting the spot, just wondered if there was something similar but .... better?

Coffee with a glug of double cream stirred in, perhaps a couple of sweeteners too.

PotatoesPastaAndBread · 19/08/2018 15:34

Well half the time I just eat the cake! But if I'm really trying to avoid it I'll have an options hot chocolate sachet. It's not a healthy alternative but it's healthier...

Libertybells1 · 19/08/2018 15:55

Dried banana chips. 3 or 4 with a cuppa usually keeps the cravings at bay for me.

Ilmb · 19/08/2018 15:59

Is there much sugar in the options?

Mmm banana chips... haven’t had those for years! Thanks will get some in/

fancy cake or chocolate is fine when you fancy it. have a small serving.

Xmasbaby11 · 19/08/2018 16:03

I struggle with this too. Sometimes I have chocolate rice cakes or berries, yoghurt and a sprinkle of granola.

TrappedByATurtle · 19/08/2018 16:04

I dislike dark chocolate so in an effort to wean myself off normal chocolate I bought some in. I went for a high quality flavoured one. Can't eat more than a square, not so bitter as a plain dark choc because the flavour takes the bitterness away. Best thing is, can't stand normal chocolate any more!

Ilmb · 19/08/2018 16:08

No I can’t blue, hence why I now don’t keep any in and trying to find something healthier to replace it when I want to sit down with a cup of tea Grin is finding the less I have (wether that’s alcohol, cake, chocolate, ice cream etc) the less I want it so I’m trying not to give in, especially whilst I’m trying to get my weight down. I want to get into better habits .

@Ilmb

Do you have Instagram?? Lots of ‘clean’ instagrammers post healthy treats. Deliciously Ella is on of my favourites. Lots of recipes for heathy snacks and treats.

I personally snack on medjool dates when I want something sweet.

I also like chocshot it’s 13cals per 1 tsp and rather rich it’s nice drizzled over raspberries.

KimCheesePickle · 19/08/2018 16:10

A couple of squares of 85% dark chocolate with some peanut or almond butter generously smeared over. A tiniest pinch of sea salt, literally about 10 grains on top.

I KNOW they look gross. But they’re actually really good and you probably have the ingredients. Only do half the ingredients so you don’t eat them all and pop the rest in the freezer. These genuinely taste like actual brownies.

This isn’t going to be a popular answer, but if you want to keep the weight off long term, you need to train yourself out of the expectation to have something with your cup of tea ‘just because’.

Try and make the tea itself an event. Have the nicest bags, your favourite cup, filter the water, have the nicest milk (not skim, proper milk) and really savour it.

If you want cake, in the same vein, once a week plan to eat a really delicious piece of cake. Choose carefully, put it on a plate with a fork, make that perfect cuppa and really enjoy it.

The key to keeping weight off is to eat when you are hungry, stop when you’re not. Learn what hungry feels like (not bored or peckish) and learn to savour food rather than snacking out of habit.

User878929333 · 19/08/2018 16:23

A lot of the ‘clean’ stuff is still high in sugar and calories even if it’s not processed. It’s better to have cake as an occasional, deliberate treat, rather than replace the daily/twice daily biscuit with some other sweet thing.

SusanWalker · 19/08/2018 16:27

If I want something sweet I have a mini milk ice lolly. 30cals and I eat them slowly.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 19/08/2018 16:30

I like strawberries or melon with alpro coconut yogurt on top. Then if I really need an extra sweetness I crumble a meringue on top. The mini meringues are good for a sweet treat occasionally. Co op do strawberry and vanilla flavour ones.

Pirandello24 · 19/08/2018 16:34

Either a fruit ice lolly or a chocolate rice cake

Ilmb · 19/08/2018 16:53

newboot you are spot on. That’s how I used to be.... trying hard to get back to that. Will definitely think about what you’ve had.

The cocoa orange nakd bars got me totally off chocolate once (completely back on chocolate now though!). I also make nut, dates, apricot and cacao energy balls when I want something sweet. Get yourself raw cacao, it's much richer tasting than cocoa.

BarbraDear · 19/08/2018 17:44

I know they aren't 'healthy' but they are low calorie and quite sweet so I will suggest Fibre One bars. The salted caramel is my favourite and one of my staples while doing Slimming World.

formerbabe · 19/08/2018 17:47

I keep a bag of dates in the cupboard...they are sticky and like caramel/toffee.
