How many driving lessons?

I have just come back from my second driving lesson, and was wondering how many lessons people usually have before taking their test? It still seems like a lifetime away Intill I am driving on my own.... 😥

I started lessons a month after my 17th birthday, so around early May and I passed my test in the first week of January of the next year. So that was about 8 months with weekly lessons. It took me two attempts to pass my theory test but I passed my practical first time. If it hadn't been for messing up on the theory, I would have sat my practical quicker.

mistermagpie · 19/08/2018 14:43

It really depends on your circumstances and aptitude. I started learning at 18 then ditched it due to cost, started again a couple of years later, failed three tests and passed on a fourth attempt. So basically, millions of lessons! I also know people who had 12 actual lessons, bit of practice with family or whoever and passed first time.

kaytee87 · 19/08/2018 14:44

These days apparently it takes 60 hours driving to learn.

It took me just over a year with one lesson per week and i also passed theory and practical first time.

It will soon fly by and you'll be driving on your own before you know it.

Cherrybomball · 19/08/2018 19:06

Thanks for your replies, wow an average of 60 hours is going to cost alot! I have already booked a block of ten for £230 then it is £25 an hour after that, also I am 32 so not as young as most of you when you learned! I am going to have weekly lessons and aiming for next summer to be on the Road

A lot!
Dd is starting this month and I'm prepared for it to cost a fortune.

MadisonAvenue · 19/08/2018 19:10

My son is currently learning, he has his third test next month and will have his 60th lesson this week. It's costing a bloody fortune what with paying for lessons, tests and putting petrol in and insuring his own car for him to practice in. He's a bloody good driver though but just can't get through a test.

ALittleAubergine · 19/08/2018 19:13

I'm in my 30s, trying to learn. No family or friends to help me so I'm relying solely on paid lessons. It's taken 26 lessons so far and I think I need another 20. I'm trying to find an automatic lesson provider to hopefully help bring the cost down.

NancyJoan · 19/08/2018 19:15

I had 40 hours over 3 months, when I was 30.

Cherrybomball · 19/08/2018 19:15

Oh my! It is some pricey, and I still have to by a car at the end of it, if I ever get there! But I'm hoping it will be worth it, my oh doesn't drive ethier so the freedom will be amazing, and I can take my little girls out without relying on anyone else. That is my motivation.

RedRedBluee · 19/08/2018 19:18

I can’t remember exactly but I think I had around 24 hour long lessons. I passed first go though.

Cherrybomball · 19/08/2018 19:19

Oh my! It really is goinh to cost alot at the end of it all, but I know its got to be worth it, the freedom to take my girls on Fun days out without having to rely on anyone else to drive us, even popping to the supermarket, reakon I will need at least another 20 Confused

I have my test in a week and I’ve had about 25 hours of lessons but I have my own car and frequently go out with DH.

katmarie · 19/08/2018 19:23

Do you have anyone you can do some private practice with? You must be insured on their car, and if I remember rightly, they have to be over 25 and have had their license for 3 years. Provided they meet that criteria they can sit with you and let you drive about with l plates on the car. Is there anyone in your family or friends who would do that for you? That would reduce the number of lessons and the time it would take.

Bubblemagic11 · 19/08/2018 19:27

I had 11 lessons including the hour before my test and I passed. I don’t think he should have passed me though, I didn’t even put the gear into first when we first pulled away and kept stalling on a three point turn. The examiner told me I must have just been nervous. This was years ago so they must be more stringent now. And now I’ve had much, much more practice of course.

KateMcD451 · 19/08/2018 19:29

@ALittleAubergine I'm the same as you, 30s, won't have anyone to go out and practice with do I'm looking for an automatic instructor. I think it'll be quicker and cheaper just learning the laws of the road rather than having to get to grips with the gears too GrinBlush

Cherrybomball · 19/08/2018 19:49

That is a good idea kat Marie, I could ask my mum I suppose, I think she may a bit panicy In The passager seat, does it cost extra to be put on someone else insurance? I always thought I could buy my
car now then I could practice in it with someone to get used to it, atm I am learning in a Ford focus only a year old, hopefully it wo t be like starting all over again in a different car?!
Good luck on you test justinline 25 hours learning seems a good amount of lessons
Bubble magic sounds if only I could pass as easily as you!

I was useless. Had 88! Plus a lot of practice in my parents' car. Took nearly a year. Passed first time though.
