What careers could DD2 do with these interests?

DD2, just going into year 11, so looking at A levels next year. She has no idea what she wants to do, except:

She's very arty. Loves drawing and creating things, in particular puppets, or costumes. Loves cosplay and makes her own costumes for that.

Loves photography. Did work experience with a wedding photographer but said she didn't want to do that as a career.

Is a good singer, but no dance training at all. Loves the idea of being on stage but gets quite nervous.

Has an affinity with animals. I can't see her doing anything medical but she just has a thing with all animals, they seem to hone in on her and befriend her.

Loves reading, and creative writing.

She was thinking for A levels of perhaps English lit, something drama or theatre ish, something arty/textiles/photography, or something with animals (if such a combination can be arranged by college!)

Ideally, she'd like to combine all of this into a career, but we can't think of anything that would! Can you?

Thanks!

Graphic design maybe?
She could work in advertising?

Could do art work with theatres? Like make costumes and sets?

ScrambledMeg · 18/08/2018 23:10

Set design in theatres? Lighting and sound technician. Costuming. May need DT for this?

Rebecca36 · 18/08/2018 23:11

It sounds to me as if she would be a perfect teacher in a rather liberal, unconventional school where individuality is prized. Of course she may not want to teach kids, it's just an idea.

Many young people have no idea what sort of career they want until way after A levels so I wouldn't worry. She'll work something out.

Definitely something like set design - could progress to TV set design.
Costume design.

So A levels of art, textiles and maybe photography.

She might have to do something animal related in her spare time, perhaps a volunteer somewhere?

Marketing? Very broad roles available so she could try some different things. Creativity, excellent grammar and an eye for finding catchy images and media to use are all key aspects of the job. Probably not too difficult to get some work experience in either.

It's pretty specialist, but there are careers training animals for film, TV and stage, there are companies in London who specialise. Something like that could make use of many of her talents, although the first step is probably a degree in animal behaviour which is very science based.

GloGirl · 19/08/2018 00:04

Graphic design or animation. A love of animals will be a bonus as she can study features and movement etc.

NotMeNoNo · 19/08/2018 00:10

Something in movie production creating latex monsters probably (spent too long watching how they made Lord of the Rings on the extra DVDs)

Get her to speak to a careers advisor or at least do online psychometric tests to help narrow down what it is she enjoys about those things and consider her options.
Art teacher?
Primary teacher?
Art therapist?
Photography in armed forces?
Textiles or costume degree somewhere like St Martins and see where it leads?
Museum curator?
Window display work for big department stores?
Interior design degree?

Your DD sounds like my two. DD1 did an art Foundation year at Chelsea Art College and then a degree in Model Making and Technical Effects at Hertfordshire. She now works in the film industry. DD2 is currently doing a Design For Performance degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, which covers all aspects of stage performance from set design to costume to lighting and sound (they also do amazing puppetry work). The intake is only about 20 per year and competition for places is fierce. Both of the above courses looked favourably on students who had completed an Art Foundation Course. I would also recommend DT as an A level choice as this gives students important practical/technical skills.

LexieLoos · 19/08/2018 01:57

Computer game designer (I know this is a very broad term but worth looking at what specific roles it offers).
A friend is similar, and is now very successful in this field.
The creativity/literature side helps with the story and character development.

Fishingisnotasport those sound like my DD's idea of heaven! May I ask what they did 16-18 to get onto their courses?

She wants to do DT, not sure about other a levels yet.

dancinfeet · 19/08/2018 08:28

Theatre costume or prop design? Animatronics for stage/film?
