Which is the best supermarket for online shopping?

Coming to the U.K. next month for a work placement and will need to do online shopping for food, toiletries, etc. Which supermarket would you recommend, and why?

I've only ever used online supermarket shopping over 15 years ago and that was to buy wine / booze for the occasional house party, so I am really not sure what I want or what to look for.

Deliveries will need to be evenings or weekends.

I use Tesco mainly with occasional Sainsburys deliveries. Both are very good where I am. Few substitions, good quality fruit & veg picked, warnings about any short use-by dates, can refuse anything I don't like & get refunded, personable delivery drivers

You'll get various feedback - x is terrible, x is brilliant. I think they differ from store to store.

I've used Ocado for years, I think they're great, no trouble. I know they don't cover the whole country so you'd have to check the delivery area. Good luck with your work placement.

Ocado. It comes from a warehouse, not your local supermarket - meaning there are fewer substitutions/missing items as their stock control is great, and everything is generally fresh as it's not been sitting on the supermarket shelves.

I like Tesco; have used them for years but I recently tried Ocado and now wouldn't use anyone else. Fab.

MasonJar · 18/08/2018 21:07

Ocado - have tried all the others and none of them compare.
Food fresh, long use by dates and no need for substitutions as they always have everything I've ordered.

Morrison's because they give you a free gingerbread man dressed as a van driver Grin

Muddlingalongalone · 18/08/2018 21:13

I use Ocado or Morrisons

tenbob · 18/08/2018 21:15

Ocado
Definitely Ocado

It depends where you going to living .And what shops are near you .
Lidi and audi don't deliver. But if you are never them they are cheaper .
It best to try all of them . And see what works for you and home.

Ocado. I've been using them since they started out (15 years?) and I have never had a problem with them. Few irritating substitutions, and they have a fabulous range, not just for food but also things I need but cant be bothered to go to a shop separately to get (kitchen utensils, face cloths, poo bags. They have tie ins with Natoora and Brindisa, as well as having a great range of difficult to find international foods.

Jozxyqk · 18/08/2018 21:27

I used to use Asda - not bad. Fairly frequent substitutions / items unavailable.
Now use Morrisons - in over 2 years I've had 2 items substituted - branded butter when I'd ordered value butter, & a larger pack of something when the small size wasn't available). They charge the price of the item you ordered, so not out of pocket. And only 1 item out of stock & no sub available. They don't offer many "value" items online any more though, at least not where I live.

On all online shopping, you will pay for bags at 5p each unless there is an option to opt out, not all offer an opt out. Usually you can return them the next time you order & they will refund you.

If you have food allergies Tesco is amazing because you can filter out products containing certain allergens. They substitute things literally every week though and there’s loads of stuff they don’t stock.

lexer · 18/08/2018 21:31

Ocado.

LockedOutOfMN · 18/08/2018 21:35

Thank you, everyone: I really appreciate all of this advice as I am truly clueless.

Cake for all (when my delivery arrives...)

another vote for Ocado.

the website and app work really well (unlike tesco), rarely any substitutions, ridiculously cheerful and helpful drivers and excellent customer service.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 18/08/2018 21:44

Ocado every time

Ocado’s customer service is superb. Not the cheapest by far but there is a huge variety from value range to high end. And you can buy marjoram. You can always judge an online supermarket by its availability of marjoram haha (why is that? It’s nothing that special!)

sittingonacornflake · 18/08/2018 21:51

I'm jealous. Ocado don't deliver round here. Sniff.

sourpatchkid · 18/08/2018 21:51

I agree - Ocado. I've tried them all and I'm incredibly tight fisted but I'll pay that bit extra for their customer service and their app is easiest to use by far

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 18/08/2018 23:01

We've tried Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys. Sainsburys have been the best by far. They turn up when they say they will and provide sensible substitutions. We've never even had a grumpy driver and most are beyond helpful.

Our experience with Tesco is dated but from memory, their substitutions were a bit bizarre sometimes and we stopped using them after a second no-show, no-ring incident.

Asda were the worst for us - failed to show up for delivery on one occasion and the choice of products was more limited.

Do bear in mind that each chain may vary depending on location - it depends where the van loads up so we have a more limited selection of stuff from Sainsburys here than when we were in London.

Vitalogy · 19/08/2018 06:56

No sure if anyone's mentioned that Ocado do match Tesco prices.

FinallyHere · 19/08/2018 07:03

Another vote for Ocado, they always turn up in their slot (or call to ask if it is OK to come early), great service and the app is a pleasure to use. We can usually get a slot for the next day, which means i cant remember the last time i actually went out to shop at a supermarket. Genuinely brilliant.
