I love my shampoo bar! Recommend me more! 😁

So after my last shunt surgery I could not wash my hair for 11 days!

So I treated myself! And went to lush for the very first time to get a much heard (read via mumsnet!) Shampoo bar!

A yellow citrus one and I love it! It's now 6 weeks down the line and it's still going strong! Hair wash at least every other day If not daily!

Easy to travel with, and saves on plastic! (DH loves this fact as he is a mad recycler!)

So I have converted my family and they are using up what shampoo and conditioners we have and i was about to go shopping to Lush to get another bar or 2 😁 But wondered if anywhere else did better ones? Am I selling my new found love short by just buying from lush?😂

And are the conditioner bars just as good?

Tell me or show me wise mumsnetters!! Thanks

You can use a soap dish from poundland from John Lewis Grin

Jozxyqk · 18/08/2018 22:52

I always used to use a soap dish - we rent so it had to be one of the ones that stick to the tiles. Worked fine, it didn't go soggy. I used to wet it properly then run it down the length of my hair 3-4 times, pick off any stray hairs then lather up. Worked just fine. I only stopped using Soapnuts products because they seemed to have stopped producing a while ago, most annoying, but I'm glad they're up & running again. I like their products.
I've added Funky Soaps to my Pinterest board so I'll remember them later.

Lush uses palm oil? Whoa.

Yeah I won't be using Lush again for several ethical reasons! It was just convenient then found out the products are full of stuff I'd rather not use.

Jb291 · 18/08/2018 23:35

Hi Random.' Funky soap are sls and paraben free. I love their stuff.

MarthaArthur · 18/08/2018 23:42

Friendly soap is fab

Jozxyqk · 19/08/2018 00:27

I used to love Lush - used the henna dyes, face cream, soaps, shampoo, face masks, bath bombs etc. DH liked the shower gel. We spent a lot in there. They are now on my boycott list, after discoveries about their ethical standpoint on various issues. Plus, they use SLS & parabens in a lot of their products, & a lot of unnecessary perfumes which are irritating to the skin.

73kittycat73 · 19/08/2018 01:58

Plus, they use SLS & parabens

What are they then, are they bad for you/the planet?

I'm not keen on Lush's ethics either. They support Mermaids, & [[https://mitheringsfrommorningside.wordpress.com/category/sexismmisogyny/
they don't seem to have much respect for their female staff.]]

I tried the shampoo bars and bought a lush tin to store in after use. Unfortunately I couldn't get it back out of the tin and it broke apart and ruined when I finally did. Anyone have any ideas how to not make this happen?

bionicnemonic · 19/08/2018 07:16

Not sure what you mean SamSmith but could you turn the tin upside down while you store it so the soap sits in the lid, then when you open it you don’t have to reach inside to get it out, might slide off the lid more easily? I store tinned beans like that (upside down)...then when you open the tin you just shake it and they fall out instead of getting stuck at the bottom so have need a spoon

OhHolyJesus · 19/08/2018 07:21

Try friendly soap for soap and shampoo bar and Juliet Rose for conditioner.

Cric · 19/08/2018 07:27

When you order online what packaging does it come in?? I want to get one but live in a town that doesn't sell anything like that, l don't think! But if it gets posted with loads of plastic packaging.... defeats the point?!? Thanks.

OhHolyJesus · 19/08/2018 07:35

Both the companies I suggested use only paper envelopes or paper as far as I know. That's what they used with my order.

Lush use paper bags and their solid deodorant and soaps etc are wrapped in beeswax type paper. My problem with Lush is their politics. A few threads on here about them.

Found out about friendly soap etc on the ethical living board on Mumsnet too x

EmpressOfSpartacus · 19/08/2018 07:36

Wild Sage bars come wrapped in paper & packed in cardboard - nothing else.

AnnaMagnani · 19/08/2018 07:45

I am using one from the All Natural Soap Company. It's fantastic - hair great, loads of lather, no SLS or palm oil. I also wouldn't use the Lush ones for those reasons and it stays really firm and doesn't crumble everywhere.

allnaturalsoap.co.uk/product-category/shampoo/

Their soaps are lovely too. They also package in paper/card only.

squiglet111 · 19/08/2018 08:00

With the lush tin I also found the bar stuck in the tin after use. I have a knife that I use to unstick it each day! I might try the upside down trick!

I bought the pink/purple one in early June and it's still going strong

squiglet111 · 19/08/2018 08:00

Oh and it did break a bit when it first got stuck and I tried to take it out. Luckily it remolded quite easily

wineusuallyhelps · 19/08/2018 08:13

Could anyone please advise if the Lush bars strip coloured hair (more than any standard shampoo?).

My hair is a combination of dark brown with blonde highlights, all dyed Smile

Kr250710 · 19/08/2018 08:45

@wineusuallyhelps I was just about to ask exactly the same Grin

EnterFunnyNameHere · 19/08/2018 08:57

I recently had a look around at a lot of solid shampoo and settled on soapnuts.co.uk stuff. I really like it, my hair feels great, and I use it with an ACV rinse (hard water area so helps wash it out).

For me though, it was also around the ethics. Primarily I wanted to reduce plastic waste, but it seemed a bit weird (for me) to get on my moral high ground about plastic and ignore the ethical concerns (for want of a better word) with Lush products... and funky soap I found seemed to contain "sustainable" palm oil (oxymoron?). Soapnuts stuff seemed to have least potentially dodgy stuff in it!

That's just my view though, and maybe I'm just not educated enough to spot the dodgy stuff in theirs!!

wineusuallyhelps · 21/08/2018 12:59

Having heard from my sister that she bought a completely 'eco' shampoo bar and it's apparently going to take 6-8 weeks for it to stop feeling greasy, I couldn't face being 100% ethical and bought some products in Lush Smile

Day 1 of using the honey shampoo bar and the sugar daddy conditioner bar. Pleasantly surprised at how soft my hair is. I'd say noticeably softer than my usual shampoo and conditioner.

RandomMess · 21/08/2018 13:06

4 weeks on and the lush stuff has trashed my scalp - itchy and flakey - grrrr

wineusuallyhelps · 21/08/2018 13:12

Oh no @RandomMess! Well - I shall persevere and report back!
