Was your child was a late walker?

My 14 month old son has gross motor delays; he can roll and sit up but not yet crawl or weight bear. All other development on track. I asked the GP for a referral and yesterday saw the community Paediatrician who scared me senseless. She said he meets the criteria for muscular dystrophy (blood tests) next week and his head is too big which is worrying.
I know I just have to wait for the tests but if anyone had a baby that was just late walking and is ok i’d love to hear it.

Hope all goes ok for you op. My ds2 walked at 17m and three weeks and hv frightened me when they said they would refer if e wasn’t walking at 18m- I was told this when ds 16mo. He crawled later and did EVERYTHJNG later than older ds2. My MIL said younger babies have siblings so don’t need to do stuff ie toys passed, fed when older one is .

Sorry pressed too soon. Have you older chn or cousins your lo spends lots of time with?

delilahswishes · 18/08/2018 16:54

Almost wish I hadn’t asked for a referral now..

Try not to think like this, you have done the best possible thing for him. I have a child with a disability and although it was so tough getting an early diagnosis at the time, I am so grateful now that it was picked up early.

It is far better it has been flagged up now for them to look into it as they must feel it is needed as the vast majority of late walkers (mine included) aren't really followed up until the age 2 mark as it is still well within "normal range"

My son was late with crawling, pulling to standing & didn't walk until he was 18 month. Now he's almost 4 & runs everywhere with the energy of (what feels like) 10 men!! His cousin is 3 month older & was super early with everything, it was agonising comparing them.

One of my dc walked at 18 months although he bum shuffled everywhere. Another of my dc walked at 22 months. We did see a paediatrician and I remember her saying as long as they walked by 24 months there was no need to worry. I hope all goes well for you.

DS started walking just before 18 months - on Xmas day!

But before that he was pulling himself up quite a bit.

He was a bum shuffler, and our HV did say they walk later.

Late walker here. Then as a teen, competed in sports at national level (Sorry, not showing off - trying to be supportive!)

I found this questionnaire helpful (I’m not recommending company as I have never used them). Some children (especially those born early) can have some infant reflexes not go dormant. My son has been assessed and I can see the reflexes that have not gone dormant. He’s currently having treatment (there is a brushing technique) and I can already see improvement. Basically, if some reflexes do not go dormant it has a knock on effect on other reflexes not going dormant.
I also think try not to be worried - if he has a large/heavier head it might take longer as the head is the thing children need to balance when they walk. www.inpp.org.uk/child-screening-questionnaire/

Mine had gross motor delays. Was so far behind his peers I almost stopped hanging out with my friends. We were under a physio so we spent so much time at hospital, we nearly missed hanging out with anyone anyway!
It was never diagnosed, he was discharged as being ‘generally a bit floppy’. He’s fine. He’s 6.5 unlikely to be an Olympic runner but flipping lovely.

It’s so hard to not compare and worry about them. Hang in there kxx

14 months isn’t ‘late’ to walk. My DD walked around 15 mths, DS was more like 18.

DS had/has some motor skills issues, and we now know has hypermobile joints, which made learning to ride a bike/swim/other things I can’t think of a bit trickier. Try not to worry, it’s likely not MD, and if it is at least you’ll know.

PeonyTruffle · 19/08/2018 07:30

My DS was 21 months, he's 4 now and still a bit wobbly on his feet, trips over anything and everything!

The health visitor said it's because one of his legs is shorter than the other (the GP checked, its not)

My daughter had a global development delay diagnosis after epilepsy as a baby. At a year old she could not get herself into a sitting position or crawl. She walked at 22 months and at 4 she can swim a few metres, run, climb, scoot and ride a bike without stabilisers. It has all come slowly, she is still behind peers but we have had such joy in every step she has achieved along the way. Obviously the anxious bit for you is that you have no known cause at the moment, but I can identify with finding baby groups very hard, all anyone seems to do is compare development. I hope the tests very quickly rule out anything serious, then use the fact you are 'in the system' to get some early intervention.
