Found a lost dog! Help!

Woken up by a lot of yelpy barking. Little Yorkshire Terrier was outside, running in and out of the road. Brought her in so she doesn't get run over but she's very unsettled, barking and whining. It's 3am. We've given her water and some slices of ham.

What on earth do we do now?

Post on some local facebook groups and try to settle her to take her to vets first thing to get her chip scanned?

Call the dog warden in the morning, they may not work at weekends. So take to a local vet in the morning and they can scan for a microchip and hopefully find the owner that way?

Or go on Facebook and post in a local group of your area that you've found a dog only description or if you post a photo ask for proof of ownership before you hand over.

Well done for taking them in!

Put and old towel or duvet down so she has a place to sleep.

Keep her safe till it's morning then have a look if she's got a tag on her collar with a number? If not call your local dog warden (local Council number). She should be chipped so if she has an owner they will be easy to trace. She'll be best shut in a small dark room for now if you can't sit with her.

Flyingpompom · 18/08/2018 03:54

She has a collar but no tag. I've posted on Facebook, but obviously it's stupid o'clock so no-one is sharing! I'll take her to the vet first thing.
DH has just taken her round the block for a walk.

We have neighbours across the road who have the same type of dog, but I don't know them well enough to know if this is theirs or not. I am slightly worried about them, because they are usually the first up and outside if anything happens, and there's no sign of them tonight. I'd be surprised if they didn't hear the barking. Obviously can't knock at this time.

You're nice people, you and your DH. Could neighbours have accidentally left dog out and gone to bed? Easily done and if they're deep sleepers may not have heard. Hope you can get some sleep yourselves :)

Good luck with finding the owners, you're very kind to take her in. I've done the same before but had to shut the cat upstairs. The next morning a man was calling for a dog all around where we live so they were reunited quickly. This one was a terrier cross who had dug a hole under their fence and gone for a wander. They didn't live far away, hopefully that's the case with this dog.

Well we have reunited him with his owners! Neighbours across the road knew who owned him, just around the corner from us, so we woke them up at about 8.30.

Thanks for your lovely comments, we're just happy he's safe.
