Incredibles 2 or Hotel Transylvania for 5yr old?

Peace425 · 17/08/2018 21:45

I am taking my 5 year old daughter to the cinema for the first time tomorrow. We have watched a few trailers and she really laughed at the characters in Hotel Transylvania, so I was going to book that one.

However, after looking at the reviews, Hotel T is criticised for being quite bland, which The Incredibles 2 has high ratings.

If you have seen one/both of these films, do you think they will keep a 5 yr old's attention? Might she find The Incredibles 2 plot too complex to follow at her age, and just prefer the funny characters in Hotel T? Or is it just too awful?

Thanks for your views x

We saw HT and it was brilliant. 6yo dd2 loved it although she's a terrible fidget. She was a bit scared at a couple of the scene but she's a scaredy cat. There really wasn't anything to be scared of.

HT is shorter and I would think more fun for a 6 year old. I2, I felt was quite long and very loud throughout (think I’m getting old).

HT is great my 4 year old and I went to see it. I actually picked it because it’s 30 min shorter than the incredibles which I didn’t think should would sit still for long enough to watch. I enjoyed HT and so did my daughter.

I've seen both with my 6 year old HT is honestly one of the worst films I've ever seen and my ds will watch any shit going. Cinema is too expensive to waste time in bilge like that incredibles every time for me

TeaForTiger · 17/08/2018 21:56

I took my 5 & 3yo to I2 and they found it really scary. My 3yo in particular was asking about 'bad guys' for weeks afterwards.

It's much scarier than the first one, so I wasn't expecting it at all.

Def i2 constantly laughing 6yo, 9yo, 14yo (been back 3 times since), 39yo & 43yo all loved it

We've seen both with our DCs, aged 4. I would say HT held their attention better. As others have said I2 is too long. I also preferred HT, found I2 really boring and struggled to keep my eyes open.

AWhistlingWoman · 17/08/2018 22:28

Had to leave I2 as my 9 year old found it too scary! I loved it until that point. Might not be the best choice for a sensitive child?

Elisheva · 17/08/2018 22:40

Incredibles 2 takes a long time to get going, Hotel Transylvania is very silly. DSs enjoyed both, but HT was their favourite by far.

Atthebottomofthesea · 17/08/2018 22:49

I really enjoyed I2 as did the 6, 10 and 12 year olds. But as others have said it is long and quite scary at times.

We saw it in the autism showing, so no trailers, lights on and sound dimmed, that probably made it a lot better.

We took our 5 year old for the first time last week to see HT and he really enjoyed it, he has ASD so we didn’t know if he’d like the experience or not but he really enjoyed the film

puddleduckmummy · 17/08/2018 22:56

Took my 5 year old to see both and I'd go with HT, Incredibles 2 was ok but a bit predictable & formulaic. I mean HT Isn't groundbreaking but it was more entertaining!

Peace425 · 18/08/2018 19:54

Hi, well - I took her to see HT today in the end.

After laughing loads at the trailer, she hardly smiled all the way through it! It was probably just the mood she was in though. She said she enjoyed it. I found the plot very predictable, but it kept me interested enough to want to know how it would play out at the end.

The only real criticism I had was that the vocabulary was a bit advanced for a 5 year old - much of it went over her head. The jokes could have been simpler and funnier. Also, they spoke very fast with strong accents. My DH struggled to understand what the main character was saying in his Transylvanian accent!

All-in-all it was a good choice.

Thank you for your recommendations! x
