Best way to label school clothes?

zebrarobot · 17/08/2018 18:41

What does everyone do? And what about shoes and water bottles?

Ds1 starting school and they say everything has to be labelled.

Thanks!

Honestly - sharpie marker on labels and somewhere else - inside sleeve or similar. Check periodically that it hasn't washed off. Will work for drinks bottles etc too.

I lovingly sewed name tapes on for the first couple of years, thinking that is what mum's do, but they can be cut out if someone likes the look of your coat or jumper. Pen much more difficult to get rid of.

Just noticed errant apostrophe. Argh!

Stickins labels work on clothes and water bottles.
They also stick inside shoes —but his sweaty feet rubbed the writing off—

I got one of the stampers this time, £13 from amazon. 5 mins work and everything is labelled. Have no idea how well it will wash but even if it needs doing every couple of months it will still be quicker than sewing the buggers in.

Rosemary46 · 17/08/2018 18:58

I prefer the iron on name tapes, because you can put them at the neck of shirts and jumpers and on the waist band of trousers and skirts. Much more likely to be seen than on a label sewn into a side seam

DifficultDIY · 17/08/2018 19:00

I use Stikins, which are white labels you can either stick on clothes or on water bottle, shoes etc.

Doesn't come off in the dishwasher or washing machine/tumble dryer which is great!

When it is time to pass the clothes on, you simply pee it off.

PostNotInHaste · 17/08/2018 19:01

Another Stikins fan here.

dingdongdigeridoo · 17/08/2018 19:02

I got stick on labels from a company called Petit Fernand. Was skeptical whether they’d stay on, but they’ve handled a school year of washing and are still legible. No faffing around with sewing or ironing them on either.

AuditAngel · 17/08/2018 19:06

I use a rubber stamp for stuff like shirts, but for blazers and £35 school skirts I use Stuckonyou’s clothing labels which are plastic and weld onto the fabric.

They also do sticky labels for water bottles etc

jenniuol · 17/08/2018 19:07

I used stickers from mynametags which a pp has also recommended - ds started p1 last year and I stuck them in everything - clothes, shoes, bag, juice bottle, snack box etc and they lasted the whole year. I bought more for him going back this week but he’s still wearing some of last years uniform with last years stickers in them and his clothes have been washed near daily!

Ida3456 · 17/08/2018 19:09

Stickins. Love them.

DameSquashalot · 17/08/2018 19:11

When it is time to pass the clothes on, you simply pee it off.

That's quite a strange method of removal DIY Grin

I use mynametags

divafever99 · 17/08/2018 19:14

I can also recommend my name tags. The stickers seem indestructible, I've even had them on dd's nursery bottles which went through the steriliser daily. You need to stick them on the label of clothes though, not the actual material. I've just ordered another set.

applesauce1 · 17/08/2018 19:20

POV from a teacher: sew in labels are the best. Iron labels seem to peel off and pen fades in the wash.

It is heartbreaking to know how much parents spend on uniform, only for it to be lost forever in the mountain of unnamed (when the pen washes out, they are unnamed), unclaimed piles of clothes.
I'd say pen for coats that are rarely washed, and sew-ins for tshirts and jumpers that are washed often.
Pen for PE pumps works well too!

Don't forget to name all the PE kit! Shorts are the clothes I most have to buy for my spare uniform stock as they go missing so often.

Invisimamma · 17/08/2018 19:21

Iron on labels - really cheap on eBay, don’t wash out and impossible for others to remove (you’d be surprised at people who will keep any items they ‘aquire’ and cut labels out).

mustangcountry · 17/08/2018 19:32

Sharpie. Have used with DS' uniform etc from day one.

Dirt cheap, quick, easy and fool proof.

AssassinatedBeauty · 17/08/2018 19:36

I've used stikins and mynametags, both have stood up to multiple washes etc. No peeling at all, and it's taken well over a school year for the ones on the water bottles to fade (they get frequent dishwashing). None of the ones on clothes have ever budged or faded.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2018 19:37

Mothercare laundry pen is better than Sharpie IME, Sharpie tends to bleed in the wash.
You want something that you can just grab and scribble a name on rather than sew-in labels because there will be school trips etc when you suddenly realise at the door that extra stuff isn’t labelled.

I use www.stuckonyou.uk/labels for stickers for lunch boxes, school bags and water bottles.

DifficultDIY · 17/08/2018 22:09

PEEL!
I obviously meant peel. Not urinating!

CatLadyToddlerMother · 17/08/2018 22:12

DDs Nursery recommend the iron on labels but say not to put them on the actual label but just underneath it so it can't be easily cut out (as it would look odd to have part of the neck cut out)

Redyoyo · 17/08/2018 22:16

I go with sharpies too, labels can be cut or peed off! If they fade you can go over them again.
Tbh though stuff goes missing no matter how its labelled. My dd went through 9 cardigans one year all labelled.
