Were you still "apple" shaped, once you lost weight?

I can remember when I was a size 10-12 in my early 20s and my stomach was flat.

The last few years into my 30s having sat more around a size 14-16, I have developed a very noticeable Apple shape type tummy.

Now 8 months post partum I'm starting to lose weight, and aiming to be back down to a healthy BMI and about a size 12. My stomach is pretty stretched out of shape, and I appreciate it's unlikely to go back to flat, but have any of you managed to lose the "Apple" shape as you lost weight? Or did your legs and bum just get skinnier and you kept the tummy?

I've just lost a stone, another stone to go, but I've found this time (two years post section, have been up/down size/shape wise) round, my figure had gone back much more like it was previously to bring pregnant. Possibly down to having a toddler who is never still so I'm doing a lot more exercise and walking everywhere to try and wear him out!

Lost it off my feet and chins first, then it's come off my pouch and legs and arms. My arse is yet to shrink but that was sizable before anyway.

I went down 2 dress sizes a few years ago, and I think I'm more hourglass how. I wouldn't say my stomach is flat exactly but I don't look 5 months pregnant anymore either, and I definitely have a waist where no waist existed before! And I have one chin instead of three, thanks to cutting way back on sugar

I lost four stone last year and my middle was still way thicker than the rest of me. I have to size up in tops and dresses to fit my waist but then they are too big on the chest Sad

I'm getting back down to somewhere near where I was before children, but I'm not the same shape! Ok, I'm less toned everywhere, but I used to be a standard 14 top and bottom. I've been back in 14 tops for a while now but my hips are still closer to a 16.
Still have both a waist (from the front) and a belly (from the side)!

I'm a classic apple.
Narrow hips and thighs, good arms, legs and shoulders.
I carry all my podgyness on my tummy. It's the first place to gain weight and last place to lose it.
It's just the way I'm built (and my mum is exactly the same).

Yes I did get to a less apple shape with a reasonable waist size (28 in jeans) but as soon as I put on a few pounds it goes straight back on my tummy. I have just had dc3 and i pit on way too much weight so am back to start again - hope I can get back again.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 17/08/2018 13:36

Yes.

I've been from 7 stone to 12 stone and stayed the same shape throughout just grew or shrank!

Have not had a flat tum since schoolgirl. But have very narrow hips, small bum, slender thighs. Classic apple.

You can lose or gain weight but you can't change how or where your body stores weight or docs would be advising all men how to stop being apples and be pears instead! (Healthier for the heart).

Even had a woman on here once lay into me as I said I'd never get the hip/waist ratio that is supposed to be healthy as I am just not shaped like that. She interpreted this to mean I was very overweight and stubborn. I said I didn't have that even when I was 7 stone so what exactly did she want me to do.

TBH rereading your OP you don't actually sound like an apple - if you have a bum and thighs and had a flat tum in 20s. I am sorry to say this might be the famed "middle aged spread". My friend who was always more standard woman shaped got a tum after kids and when she hit late 30s - she is gutted and v self conscious about it. I've had a tum always so am used to it - it's jst how I'm built! I apprecaite it;s a shock if "new" and diet and exercise may help but, it's probabyl nto going to be how you were in your 20s again unless you start spending hours every day in the gym, sorry.

Lose weight to where you want to be and work with what you've got Smile I'm sure you look awesome Smile

MarcieBluebell · 17/08/2018 13:40

Unfortunately you can't choose where weight comes off first. You have to lose enough weight so it comes off everywhere. Squats and planks also help.

Glitteryfrog · 17/08/2018 14:23

I'd never get the hip/waist ratio that is supposed to be healthy as I am just not shaped like that.

Same here. My ribs and hip bones are the same. There is isn't enough space for there to be much of a waist. Even when I'm a size 8 (I'm a 10 at the moment)I'm still a cylinder.
But I do have thigh gap.

sar302 · 18/08/2018 20:52

Thank you all. Mixed results, but not surprising I suppose as everyone is different!

@Glitteryfrog Yes that's what made me think of it actually, as my mum is fairly trim in her late 60s, but has a definite tummy, and I'm wondering whether I will be the same.

@NothingOnTellyAgain - thank you 😊

You're right. First stop is lose the weight - then worry about it when I get there I suppose!!

Good luck!

Even when under 8 stone I've always been apple shaped.
