What do I need from Ikea?

DH wants a chair that won't ruin his back.
DD has just started school so we need to equip her with a desk etc.

What little things are there to make my life easier that I don't know about?

Storage boxes and sandwich bags are my very trip buy, although I randomly bought a colander last time

5000KallaxHoles · 17/08/2018 10:42

Ahem... see user name for what I usually buy.

PixieMiss · 17/08/2018 10:43

A hotdog!

jmh740 · 17/08/2018 10:46

You can't leave without candles

WooYa · 17/08/2018 10:47

All of the candles! And meatballs...

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/08/2018 11:08

Scissors. Three pairs for under a pound and great quality.

Get 2 or 3 packs and put a pair in a drawer in every room in the house and there will still be no fucking scissors when you need them you'll always be able to find scissors.

InDubiousBattle · 17/08/2018 11:21

Storage boxes and meatballs. Those thin ginger biscuits. I have only ever been to ikea for a bit of a look around with my sister (who would move there). I have never spent less than £100 'looking around'!

catlady34 · 17/08/2018 11:36

Their bookcases are fab. They also do cool folding trays with long legs so you can eat on the floor, and gold cutlery Grin their pots are great! Ah I love ikea.

MouseholeCat · 17/08/2018 12:54

Furniture and stuff:
Their throws and blankets are very reasonably priced. Ditto cushions.

Those multi packs of scissors.

Their toys are great- maybe get some for stocking fillers or friends' birthdays?

Food:
A hot dog.... maybe two. The blueberry and lingonberry cordials. They used to sell Punsch rolls (marzipan cake things) which were delicious... get them if you can, but I think they replaced them with Princess cakes.

Kallax! You won't be able to stop at one.

Angie169 · 17/08/2018 13:09

A map to find your way out !

TrappedByATurtle · 17/08/2018 14:22

Yes, with DH and the DC I'll be desperate to find the exit after about 20 mins!! Good tips!

What does DD need for desk equipment?

I love their napkins
Always buy loads when I go there

TrappedByATurtle · 17/08/2018 14:33

Ooo napkins and party plates. Good idea!

A random cuddly toy shaped as a carrot

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 17/08/2018 14:35

To make sure that you measure the hole that you are putting the Kallax in, and it actually fits...

(pic is genuine...)

TrappedByATurtle · 17/08/2018 15:36

Grin what did you do? Make a secret cupboard? No space for Kallax sadly!

OP posts:
BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 17/08/2018 15:48

I have no idea how I managed it, I've looked at the measurements and there was no way it was ever going to fit - it's about 15cm too wide Grin

Plan is to turn it on it's side to replace the sideboard and get the smaller one for the hole.

Another essential of mine is the smoked salmon. Had some this morning, it's the best I've tried.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/08/2018 23:00

@bringonspring don't forget the strawberry or the broccoli, although carrots one was parachuted off our local church tower in the name of charity a few years ago

Danceintherain2018 · 17/08/2018 23:02

Unless your dd has started senior school, she shouldn't need a desk!! The kitchen table would be fine! (Although it will probably be practical things or reading in Reception which you can do anywhere!) :)

TrappedByATurtle · 18/08/2018 06:24

She hasn't, just primary and they're limited to 30 mins a week. DS too, but they don't necessarily get it on the same day and DS has a habit of trying to take over what she's doing (1yr above). She does love drawing so I don't think it would harm if she has a dedicated space to keep all her crap off the dining room table

Multi packs of scissors - they're really sharp and cost about £1

Roll of kids art paper - it's great because it lasts ages

Various things from the kids section (we love the stool, potties, aprons and plastic plates/cups/bowls)

Kallax - you can buy them in all different sizes so that you can squeeze them into all sorts of spaces (we have the smallest house in the world and have several but only 1 visible to people)

The Kallax boxes - we use them in and out of the Kallax. Out - we have 6 in our airing cupboard for towels and bedding and 3 in our wardrobe for shoes - they fit sooooo much in. We've bought more for dd's wardrobe that we're doing up.

Shoe cupboard - if you have the space one of their thin up against the wall cupboards is a game changer. Ours fits in about 30 pairs of shoes (inc kids).

Ikea meatballs - about 100 bags for the freezer
