Why are houses in Falmouth, Cornwall so expensive?

Husband has got a job opportunity in Cornwall. We have been looking at houses to buy, particularly in Falmouth and can't believe how expensive they are. Who is buying these houses? particularly the large family homes that seem to sell so quickly. We had hoped to be able to get more for our money but it doesnt seem so.

I have lived in many areas considered rough and my line of work has taken me to many too.

I don't like Camborne or Redruth sorry. I would never live there.

Not my bag sorry.

I'm also not keen on the mining type villages, again just my taste. A bit bleek at times.

Rebecca36 · 17/08/2018 23:11

I just looked on Rightmove and houses in Falmouth don't seem that expensive.

Bleak around Carn Brea is the same as bleak around Falmouth pier on a misty night, just no screaming students wacked on rattler processco.

The real gentle cornishfolk remain in the mining towns, Holmans choir is quite something, as is Camborne Youth Band, I tell ee.

Although I realise the OP doesnt want proper Cornish.

Shame me andsome, shame.

If you have that much to spend you are definitely able to buy something decent.

And I think you have been somewhat disengenous. You are plainly worldly people. Fairly savvy. I question what was the point of this thread really. You surely must have known that certain parts of Cornwall are called “Chelsea by the sea”. And that most of the “nice” parts of Cornwall have been bought up by “outsiders”.

I still wish you well in buying a family home - as that is a decent aspiration for everyone. But your initial post gave a very different impression from the reality of your situation.

PhilMitchellsBeard · 17/08/2018 23:43

Definitely disingenuous..... oh woe is me, I can’t find a house for 900K in Falmouth... what the actual fuck? Lol do you realise the average salary for Cornwall is £20k??
And the reason large homes get snapped up is because Falmouth is a —shithole— student town, so likely snapped up to become HMOs....
Good luck on your quest with your paltry 900K you brave tenacious people Grin

CazzieCatsRock · 18/08/2018 01:53

@PhilMitchellsBeard - Are you really Steve McFadden?? Grin Have seen you twice in Cornwall in the past; once in Penryn & once at Newquay Airport. Just wondering. And you have a lovely smile in RL.....

FFS.

Well Timefortea they are planning to actually live in Cornwall, not just have a holiday home there.

OP I think you'll be able to get a decent home in Falmouth within your budget. Good luck, I hope you'll be happy there.

Couldn't buy a five bed house in London area for that price!

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/08/2018 07:43

But the point is that if they have a £900k budget, they clearly have equity built up by owning a house in a more expensive area (or inheritence etc from someone in that position) and/or aren't on the salaries locals earn, averaging £20k.

So yes they are part of the problem and the 'woe is me, we thought houses in not in London/SE England cost buttons and we could have a big massive impressive house for not very much money' makes them look a bit ignorant.

A bit like when Londoners expect to be able to buy a big house in Ilkley, or Harrogate, Wetherby or Chester areas and find that they cost £1M+ and whine 'but we thought the North was cheap.

Nodnol · 18/08/2018 10:29

I just looked on rightmove. Plenty of choices. Do you want something to move straight into without work or would you be willing to do some renovations?

What is the rental market like? Could you rent for a while in the area so you can jump on anything that comes available?

It seems a beautiful part of the country, I’m jealous!

aubergineterrine · 18/08/2018 12:12

The point of this thread was from someone who does not know this area very well is to ask who lives in Falmouth? particularly who are buying the large family homes? ie; are they families, second homes or investors. Is it a family town or are we better off moving to Truro for example? I had not really considered the villages as we have a preference for living in town, but thank you for the suggestions maybe we should consider them.

As we are moving to live in Cornwall and to be part of the community, we had thought Falmouth was more of a working town therefore had much fewer holiday homes than say Padstow or St Ives.

Live in Truro, get the train to work in Falmouth. Students and second homers have made Falmouth insanely expensive, and the restrictions on HMOs have pushed the student landlords out to Penryn.

It's about supply too - Falmouth's not a large town!
