I am sure this must have been done before , but who wants books ?

Lots of good quality ones i.e. decent quality hardbacks , sets of classics , , not throwaway "airport" type ones , some Ds used for A levels ( varying conditions ) - have tried charity shops and they seem to be battening down the hatches on books because no room. I understand that - that's why I am trying give these away. I could just bin them , but although I have bitten the Kindle bullet big time , it still feels wrong to just bin them.

Do I just get over it? There is a 2nd hand bookshop near us so I may ask them if they want to come and look and take what they want , but any other suggestions.

Have sorted out a few which may just may be useful for the local primary school.

Any other suggestions before I just give them over for landfill Sad

Anyone who wants a free book just PM and I'll see if I have it - gratis to anyone.

Ask any local secodnary schools - our school library gladly takes good quality books.

MagentaRocks · 16/08/2018 20:29

I took a load of good condition books to the local library

IAmTheWifeOfMaoTseTung · 16/08/2018 20:31

If you’re in London you could drop them off at a tube station book swap. Some pubs or cafes have shelves for charity book sales.

And yes, try the local secondary school.

My children regularly put a table of assorted books and an honesty box outside our gate and have made quite a lot of money for various charities over the years. I've also given a couple of bags of books away over freecycle.

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/08/2018 20:38

Donate to or set up a little free library

redshoeblueshoe · 16/08/2018 20:41

A pub near me has started a sort of mini library. You can just take one home, or drop some in. I think it's a great idea.

Racecardriver · 16/08/2018 20:44

If you love in London you could dump them at the Carnaby Book Exchange.

Racecardriver · 16/08/2018 20:45

The Teahouse Theatre is Southwark also used to have books for patrons to read, you may want to try them if you are South of the river.

Mailfuckoff · 16/08/2018 20:46

Stick something on fb local Freebay site, I like getting job lots of books and reading them or giving them away

Kueh · 16/08/2018 20:47

You could sell them to webuybooks, you generally only get pennies for them but they’re collected for free any any that they can’t use are (allegedly) responsibly recycled which sold me on it as books are often difficult to recycle at home.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 16/08/2018 20:55

Please don't landfill, at the very least use the paper recycling 😩

thismeansnothing · 16/08/2018 20:58

Our local Tesco has a book swap could leave some there...... Same Starbucks see if they want them

Beamur · 16/08/2018 21:02

Some doctors surgeries/vets/supermarkets sometimes have a table with 2nd hand books for sale for charity.
The city I work in has a free book exchange, the waiting room in my nearest train station has a book case where you can leave/borrow books for free.
Older people's homes?

ShadowKitty · 16/08/2018 21:02

Have you tried Ziffit? They buy used books - you download their app and scan the barcodes to see how much they'll pay per book. It's not much individually but if you've got lots it's worth doing.

I recently put a load of mine in a box at work and asked for donations in exchange for books then I gave the money to charity. I don't like chucking anything away either - Facebook marketplace is good for giving things away free.

Plexie · 16/08/2018 21:06

Oxfam and Barnados have some shops just for books. Maybe see if there's one near you?

Flipflop789 · 16/08/2018 21:10

Our local recycling centre (tip) has a section especially for books/dvds/cds this could be a last resort rather than just binning them?

BasiliskStare · 16/08/2018 21:48

Thank you all - I won't do landfill - promise ! Just seems a shame there are some half decent books here - thank you all for suggestions. I'm going to try them. Thank you all. I am absolutely happy to give them away to those who would like them. So I have a pile which the local primary school library may like , another few which a friend of mine's nephew might like for last year at school , we do have an elderly person sheltered type housing thing - the trains station swap thing I had not thought about. - Am going to phone the 2nd hand book shop tomorrow and see if they would like them. I don't want any money for these books just can't help feeling some of them someone would like , but it is how to get in touch with these people. I will try freecylcle local FB sites as well

Thank you all !

National Trust - apparently any one with a 2nd hand book store will plough proceeds back into the NT property.

ProudThrilledHappy · 16/08/2018 22:26

Take them to your local hospital? Ours has a free “library” which is basically just shelves of donated books for patients and visitors to borrow.

AdaColeman · 16/08/2018 22:34

Your local hospice or hospital might be glad of them.

Or google Book Crossing where you set books free into the wild, and you can track where they have travelled to, that would be good for the classics!
