Apple phone/iPad charger question

43percentburnt · 16/08/2018 18:58

I had 4 chargers in the house. I also have a teenager who regularly borrows chargers. I now have no chargers! No idea where any of them are and the teenager has no idea (apparently).

Does anyone know if any other chargers work with an iPhone 5 and an iPad Air 2? Or do I need to replace with genuine apple products (no apple shop near me)? I don’t want to buy something random off amazon and then find it doesn’t work.

When I get this new charger I’m writing my name on it with permanant marker Or taping it into the socket!

Thanks in advance just in case I run out of battery...

Other chargers will work, but if they blow up your devices then you aren’t covered under apple’s guarantee.

I believe you can order replacements through apple’s website though?

I bought a cheap car charger for the iPhone and the phone comes up with a message saying not supported and it doesn’t charge.
I’ve since bought a Belkin one which works. You don’t have to buy Apple, but need ones which state they’re Apple certified, saying MFi (made for iPhone). This is my experience anyway, and from what I’ve read. Others may say different!

You can buy replacements on apple.com/uk, but they are incredibly expensive.

Anker braided lightening cables from Amazon are very good. I was very disappointed with the Belkin cables I bought earlier this year, only lasted 3 or 4 weeks.

I've used apple devices for years and nearly always found that cheap, non apple wires will work, but only for a while. Usually the device will stop recognising the wire, sometimes after a few weeks but I can most often get at least a few months out of it.

If you think the wires will just end up all getting lost again, or broken often then it's better to just constantly replace with the cheap ones, but if you think you won't be replacing them all that often, if at all then it's worth paying more for the Apple wire.

I do still have a cable so I could just buy a plug. My devices are quite old so no longer under warranty but they work fine so I’d prefer them not to blow.

Argos have the genuine cable for Apple devices and sometimes on offer but always cheaper than the apple site itself. I have gone through a few myself.

Amazon Basics are good, Anker are excellent, especially the braided ones. I also buy cheapy ones for out and about.

Another vote for Anker. Also have a teenager who has no idea where the chargers are. If you have a lead then any charging plug that it fits will be fine.

Thanks there is an Argos near me so I will take a look.
