Toilet training toddler girls when out of the house - how and what?!

Hiya,

All my previous children are boys so it was no problem. They can have a wee pretty much anywhere without issue.

But struggling with my daughter. At home she just uses a seat on the toilet. And if we're out somewhere with a toilet then we can use that.

But what do I do when we're somewhere without toilets?! Do you just have to carry a potty around? Or am I missing something obvious?

Really reluctant to get a potty on the 4th child having never had used one previously. And also not sure if she'd sit on it TBH.

Any advice welcomed, thank you!

Have you never had a wee outside? If it's an emergency, just help her do it exactly the way you would do it. And try to avoid the situation entirely, shouldn't be too hard for a few weeks.

Well, I am not really a fan of letting little boys wee whenever.

Fair enough in an emergency for either sex.

Fold up potty from Jojo Maman Bebe. It can also be used as a toilet seat. It fits neatly in a largish handbag. We had to whip it out and do in in the street in a doorway. Used my body and jacket to provide cover.

Yip folding potty, very handy and easy to deal with the wee afterwards as the liners are absorbent.

overmydeadbody · 16/08/2018 12:29

If you're out in nature in a rural area you just hold them In a squat position to have a wild wee.

If you're in an urban area just know where the public loos are.

I found the oxo travel potty more sturdy than the potette.

StylishMummy · 16/08/2018 12:59

We have a collapsible potty

ChipmunksAreMissing · 16/08/2018 13:03

We used the potette. Our DD couldn't go just squatting (still can't now aged 4), so it came in handy. I still have it in the car in case of traffic

Scotinoz · 16/08/2018 13:25

I have 2 girls, and we never had a potty.

Out and about, most places have a loo; supermarket, big shops, cafes etc. I know you see stories in the Daily Fail about shops not letting you use loos, but I've never had a problem. I just them regularly when out.

And in a park etc, having a wee behind a tree is totally fine!

I've always been a bit bemused with people whipping out potties...especially the lady in the play centre a few weeks ago since there were loos about 2metres away 😅

DS1 refused to wee standing up for a long time.
I used to crouch down, lift him onto my lap, slip my arm under his knees so that his penis was pointing downwards iyswim. Takes a bit of practice, my shoes did get wet the first times.

I started a similar thread not that long ago when I was potty training DD. I took all the early advice of taking a potty/pottete out with me but felt like a right plum in practice. Totally unnecessary.

I came back to the thread after being out all day to see lots of other posters confused by all the potty carrying! I never took it out again. As others have said - know where public toilets are and if in a park just go behind a bush. DD was fine, can't say I've ever thought since 'I wish I had a potty!'.
