If you or someone you know works nights - what do you/they do?

I'm so grateful for all the night workers in the NHS and the other emergency services for working nights to keep us safe and well, but I'm wondering what other night workers there are that are hidden from view.

The reason for my post is pretty mundane. I ordered something yesterday which is being delivered tomorrow. I've been tracking the delivery, it left the factory at 5am and at 10.30 this evening has left the transport hub. So at 5am there was someone in the factory processing my unimportant (in the scheme of things - not to me!) package and at 10.30pm someone is driving it the length of the country. It's just something I've never given thought to and has made me wonder what other work people do at night while the rest of us sleep.

Lots of night shift workers in the Prison Service.

ifoundthebread · 16/08/2018 07:21

My partner is a fork lift driver and night shift is in his shift rotation. Round my area car manufacturing is a huge industry and there is so many factories from that sector and they all work 24 hours a day.

DuchessAnnogovia · 16/08/2018 07:30

My DH works nights on the railway. I'm a support worker and do nights on a rota system. I much prefer days, as there's always things to do

Husband is HGV driver. Leaves at teatime then gets home around between 7 and 8am. He transports food stuffs between depots for supermarkets mainly baked goods. I work full time so we mainly see each other at weekends but even then his bodyclock is skewed so quality time is few and far between.

GandolfBold · 16/08/2018 08:48

I have done waking nights in the past as a support worker.

My dad works nights and always has. First as a Baker and then in the last 10 years in a supermarket filling the shelves.

Littleray84 · 16/08/2018 08:52

I'm an A&E nurse working shifts normally 2 weeks out of 6 are nights. The switching back to days is a killer.

My Dp works occasional nights on the railway too.

Pinkvoid · 16/08/2018 08:54

DP’s sister is a transport manager. From what I can gather this means she orders lorry drivers about Grin. She works for a well known ale company.

MrsAmaretto · 16/08/2018 09:05

Offshore oil and gas worker. 3 weeks of night shift (6pm-6:30am)

MinaPaws · 16/08/2018 09:10

DSis and DB-i-L both do. One in an airport, one with children in care.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 16/08/2018 09:18

HGV driver. My firm does click and collect, which means as soon as the website hits the next day delivery mark, the final pick has to be dispatched with 60 minutes to the depot handling it. That means that there's vehicle movements 24/7.

Df works nights including Christmas at a dairy factory. There is always milk to be processed and made into butter/yoghurt/cream etc

DGRossetti · 16/08/2018 09:24

DS works in a casino. They're open 24 hours, and have 3 shift patterns ... 06:00-14:00, 14:00-22:00 and 22:00-06:00

He enjoys it, as he gets free time in the day to hang out ....

LaDaronne · 16/08/2018 09:24

My DH does, he's in the entertainment industry. He does the sort of thing people go out and pay babysitters to see.

Oldraver · 16/08/2018 09:26

My parents worked nights for over 30 years (retired a few years ago). They worked for a big manufacturer, Roll's Royce, Dad inspecting bits of metal my Mum was a Senior Radiologist making sure engine parts were sound.

OH works nights for a company making safety products, his department safety helmets. He works on the maintenence side making sure the robots and workers have machines that are working

WhispersOfWickedness · 16/08/2018 09:30

DH used to work nights for the Post Office a very long time ago, it was a large building with lots of security checks to get in and lots of cameras about. He counted money 💰

JackReacherReader · 16/08/2018 09:38

Nurse here- the pay is better at night. Not sure how long I want to keep doing it though!

Blobbyweeble · 16/08/2018 09:41

I work nights as a paramedic, DD as a nurse, DS1 in the theatre and DS2 at Fedex. DH is the only one who is normal in our household.

swampytiggaa · 16/08/2018 09:43

Husband works permanent nights stacking shelves at Tesco. Works for us as he is around to collect the smallest from school on my work days.

Shedsonfire · 16/08/2018 10:33

I have been a nights receptionist in a hotel before and I'm currently a night cook. I cook for people who do night shifts

tworoundsofwaterplease · 16/08/2018 11:07

I do a mix of night, early and mid shifts. I much prefer nights. They're quieter, and I've never been a morning person! I love getting home and getting into bed at 730 am and always feel much more rested after I wake up. I think for me the whole process of getting up and ready and straight to work is stressful. I'd rather go about my day, wake up leisurely and go to work later on.
If I do an early, up at 5, to work for 7, get home knackered, too tired to do anything then same again next day . Luckily most people disagree with me so I get offered a lot of shift swaps!
