What do you do whilst driving

I have to drive a lot. I listen to radio 4, five live, Jeremy Vine, the world service but I wondered what other people listen to? The connection with my phone is not great so I don’t want to rely on that. It always disconnects at the most poignant/funny/emotional sections of TED talks! Any recommendations for radio stations or ideas of something else to do to pass the time. I tried to learn a language (Urdu) - it’s a work thing not just a random choice but it didn’t go so well. I am finding my mind is wandering. My Mum was killed last year and I end up thinking all about that and the ongoing trauma of it so I need to keep my mind focused. Any ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Podcasts! My favourites are the Archers Omnibus, the Vanished and Casefile but the range on offer is infinite. Alternatively, audio books.

AScaredyLion · 15/08/2018 22:05

I sing to myself, very badly Blush

Teaanybody · 15/08/2018 22:05

Have you tried something like Audible?
I tend to sing along to whatever comes on the radio Wink

MsAwesomeDragon · 15/08/2018 22:07

I listen to audio books. I have them on my phone, but if the connection to your phone is dodgy you could get them on CD from the library for a few pounds and keep them a week or so.

superram · 15/08/2018 22:08

Download podcasts as you can download in advance.

Branleuse · 15/08/2018 22:10

Listen to Hamilton and sing along

popocatepetals · 15/08/2018 22:13

On the way home this evening I was listening to Classic FM and they were playing Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Not just the famous bits but all of it. Lovely.

ChilliPowderMild · 15/08/2018 22:27

I listen to children's audio books.
David Tennant reading How to Train Your Dragon is great, really funny, and a lot of the Michael Morpurgo ones are good too.
Don't get those read by American accents, they send you to sleep.
You could try some you tube videos of stand up comedians. The audio will come through and as long as you can't see the phone screen at all you won't be tempted to peep. Of course you have to select one to last the journey.

faceremovinghaircream · 15/08/2018 22:31

I sing at the top of my voice as it's the only place I can do it. Makes me feel deliriously happy! I'm too self conscious to sing in front of anyone.

bottledatsource · 15/08/2018 22:51

Listen to cds my kids recommend. Mostly political or emotional hiphop. Thought provoking stuff

emoji · 15/08/2018 22:52

I listen to a lot of LBC

DuchessAnnogovia · 15/08/2018 22:54

I sing along to just about anything. My opera singing is something to behold! I also listen to radio 4, podcasts, the Archers, and depending on the time of day, I listen to local radio phone in programmes. And end up shouting at some of the bloody idiots phoning in....

DwangelaForever · 15/08/2018 22:57

Audiobooks are great! Do you mean your phone signal isn't great or the Bluetooth connection between your phone and your car? If the former an app like audible would be great for audiobooks as you download it all and don't need signal to listen.

Just a tip too for freebies if your local library is signed up to overdrive you can get a bigger selection of audiobooks for free rather than paying a subscription to audible!

namechange2pointoh · 15/08/2018 22:58

Listen to Hamilton and sing along

This. Constantly.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/08/2018 03:12

Audiobooks

RedneckStumpy · 16/08/2018 03:14

Depends if I am on a public road or not, but normally I listen to Pandora, drink coffee, snack, that pretty

mammmamia · 16/08/2018 03:53

Sorry about your mum. Hope you have got some support.

I am addicted to the Home front podcast on radio 4. Check it out, you can download all the episodes so far.

MissDai5y · 16/08/2018 04:55

If we're not listening to music through our phones then we mostly listen to LBC.

My OH introduced me to this after I discovered Down the Line (radio 4).

I didn't realise that people like that actually existed but LBC has plenty of interesting callers.

Once I heard how Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII were actually black and it's a massive cover up.

MyOtherProfile · 16/08/2018 04:59

Audible is great. You download the books so connection doesn't matter.

OliviaStabler · 16/08/2018 05:51

I have a device that allows my Ipod to play through the radio and I have a driving playlist on there which helps me pass the time.

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/08/2018 06:15

What system and connectivity do you have in your car?

My last car I connected my phone using a cable from the headphone socket and this one, I do via bluetooth. On both I listen to downloaded podcasts.

If you're in your car a lot, you could also get a new stereo fitted for not a huge amount of money, that will connect to your phone and play things seamlessly. There's one in Halfords for £60 and it says they'll fit it 'from £30'.
