Cow & Gate anti reflux formula

Posting here for traffic.

My GP has suggested that we try thickened formula for DS (8 weeks) to see if it helps a little with his reflux. We have stuck with C&G as that is the formula he's been on. The instructions say to boil a kettle & wait 45 minutes but no longer & then make a feed up. Having spoken to the C&G chatline they've said they don't recommend the use of the perfect prep either.

What I don't get is how the hell an 8 week old is meant to wait 45 minutes plus another 7 for thickening for a feed??? Our HCPs have said we should be demand feeding still rather than trying to get DS into a fixed schedule, which we are more than happy with as he is thriving. The chatline was unable to offer any alternatives or even give me a guideline temperature for powder to be added to so I'm now stuck. Appears we cannot make these up in advance either due to the water temperature!
Has anybody else used anti reflux milk with a demand fed baby and survived

I have no experience with anti-reflux milk but with my refluxy baby we added a thickener to a normal milk. You add it after the bottle has been made up normally (so compatible with perfect prep) and leave it for a couple of minutes to thicken up. Takes a bit of getting used to get the quantity added right but it does thicken up quite a lot. It's called Carobel and should be available from your pharmacist for a few pounds. You could see how you get on with that otherwise I would think about going back to GP to discuss gaviscon, raniditine or omeprazole.

You can make milk up 24 hours in advance and keep in the fridge and then warm up or you can make your own prefect prep. Have premeasured 4oz of boiled and bottled Water in the fridge, boil kettle and wait 10 mins and then add 2oz of boiled water to the bottle, add 6 scoops of powder milk and give a very good shake and then add your cooled water. You will need to experiment with the hot/cold water ratio so it comes out the correct temp.

We can't make this in advance sadly as it thickens up, has to be discarded after use. I can see why tbh as you can see the thickness of it after a feed...and it's really frothy!

I did wonder about carobel but nowhere local to us sells it. I'd have to see about ordering it online I think. DS is a frigging nightmare when he's hungry, you'd think he was bloody starved!

We used it with the perfect prep. From memory we added the powder, did the hot shot, mixed with a spoon and then added the 2nd shot. We then stirred again and left it to thicken.

Thank you. Did you have any obvious issues doing it that way?

I used to do it nearly the way anotherangel2 describes above. So say I wanted 6oz, I would have made up bottles for the day, kept in the fridge and each containing approx 4 oz. I would then top up with the 2oz and then add the formula and leave for 7 mins to thicken. Would test the temp on inside of wrist obviously. Unlike ordinary formula you are not supposed to mix it with boiled water to sterilise or it won’t thicken properly.
