stopdropandroll · 15/08/2018 13:30

realised this morning in the shower, while not even consciously thinking about abba, that their group name comes from the members’ initials! was this obvious/known to everyone else except me?

OP posts:
HardSkin · 15/08/2018 13:33

Yes and it's the same backwards and forwards.

goforkyourself · 15/08/2018 13:43

Yes OP Grin

I had a similar epiphany recently about Freddie Flintoff Blush

stopdropandroll · 15/08/2018 17:00

what about freddie flintoff!?

OP posts:
HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 15/08/2018 17:01

His name isn't Freddie!

Beelin · 15/08/2018 17:02

What is his name then? Agnetha?

ajandjjmum · 15/08/2018 17:03

It's Andrew - and I think the Freddie came from Fred on the Flintstones? Or I could have imagined that completely! Grin

MeetOnTheLedge · 15/08/2018 17:03

I thought everyone knew that yes, but maybe its age related, I grew up in the 70s and was a huge fan.

GallicosCats · 15/08/2018 17:07

Abba had to ask permission to use the name (Frida's full name is Alfrida or something like that I believe). ABBA was apparently the name of a Swedish fish canning business before the group got hold of it.

So there you are - ABBA herring...Grin

BikeRunSki · 15/08/2018 17:08

Erm..., yes to ABBA, yes to Freddie Flintoff!

It took me a while to work out “Karrimor” rucsacs though. That came to me one day when I was working as an outdoor instructor.

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 17:11

Aren't weren't there people on MN who thought that Andrew Flintoff and Freddie Flintoff were two different cricketers? I'm sure I've read that on here before?!

Beelin · 15/08/2018 17:13

He's a cricketer? I thought he was a rugby player? Who's the rugby player then? Thanks for the info ajandjj.

FlibbertyGiblets · 15/08/2018 17:16

Karrimor NO WAY! YES WAY. Omg Shock

BikeRunSki · 15/08/2018 17:16

Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff is one person, and he is a cricketer.

MeetOnTheLedge · 15/08/2018 17:16

Frida is Anni-Frid. I'd forgotten about the herring company, but yes, they had to buy the rights to the name.

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 17:25

So who is your mysterious rugby player, Beelin?!?!

Mike Tindall, the husband of Zara - Princess Anne's daughter? Or someone else?!?!

wizzywig · 15/08/2018 17:26

Its anni-frid lyngstad (the dark haired one on abba

Beelin · 15/08/2018 17:30

I have no idea panpan! I remember getting up really early maybe 15 years ago to watch this big rugby game that everyone was going on about and there was a guy in that who I subsequently thought was Freddie/Anna-Frid Flintoff.

(And if you can work out who it is from that description you are doing well! 😀)

GallicosCats · 15/08/2018 18:03

Er well... the problem is that England were world beating at rugby at roughly the same time as they won the Ashes, so memories get easily scrambled. My DS was born a few months after the RWC boy was I pissed off not to be able to raise a glass

MirandaWest · 15/08/2018 18:08

DS was born right at the time of the rugby World Cup (22nd November 2003 Smile) and DD was born just after the ashes in 2005.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/08/2018 18:20

Was the rugby player Johnny Wilkinson, Beelin?

I did know that about ABBA, OP, (despite being born in the 80s so outside of their demographic), but Karrimor is a revelation. Blush

FiestaThenSiesta · 15/08/2018 18:20

I had no idea, but I thought her given name was “Frida” so always dismissed it as urban myth. The Fish company thing is funny. Reminds me of Apple corps (record label owned by Beatles) vs Apple computer (iTunes). Back in the 80s, they “settled” trademark infringement promising that Apple Corp wouldn’t make computers and Apple computer would stay out of the music business. Didn’t end well, except maybe for all the solicitors/lawyers/barristers.

Obviously Apple Computers are big in music reproduction now, but back in the day of Apple Mac v Apple Music, when Apple Mac made the first home computers, the little jingle sound they made when they powered up/down was called “Sosumi” (So Sue Me).

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 19:41

I didn't know that about 'Sosumi', Bike! Just found a Youtube of it along with the other early sounds!!

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 19:44

Now I come to think of it, I've still got Sosumi on my laptop!

Ohyesiam · 15/08/2018 19:52

I always thought karrimor was a rubbish name for a bag. I want to carry less.
