How long can a child go without having a wee/poo?

Trying to potty train 3.5 year old and he is refusing to use the potty or the toilet.

I'm trying the method I used with dd 2 years ago (she was the same age), but this obviously isn't working.

I have him going bare bum with a potty nearby. He knows where to go if he needs the toilet but he just holds it and keeps asking for a nappy. He has a sticker chart and a promise of a sweetie if he uses the potty. We've also told him once the chart is full, he can have a new toy.

I'm worried about him causing himself constipation or something else.

So realistically, how long can he go before either he breaks and goes first, or I do?

Have you tried showing him the sweetie? It makes it more real to them.

My 3.5 yr old son now goes 3-4 hrs regularly. I still don't trust him though!

Can only say from my recent experience to which the answer is all day! DD seems to have a bladder of iron and didn't give too figs about the sticker chart. I started offering a chocolate button just for sitting on the potty which worked but no wees really. Just decided to leave her nappy off at all times, even when leaving the house and she would just hold it until bed or nap time when we put a nappy on for bed. After a few days she just started going over to the potty and doing it herself and the rest is history.

Any doctor will tell you having him going at all is more important than not using a nappy. If he is refusing the toilet, let him use a nappy.
You do not want to end up with impaction.

Oh jeez baby that's exactly how I think Ds will be.

Once he's weed once, I know it will click. It's just getting that first accident.

Might have to try bribing him with sweets for just sitting on the potty first...though he will happily sit on it. Just won't do anything

Give him plenty to drink so he has to go (obviously not ridiculous amounts! Just a couple more big drinks than usual)

Mammyloveswine · 15/08/2018 16:02

This is exactly us! Ds1 is 2.5 and just hasn't weed! I'm.tempted to just pop pants on him and "flood" him with drinks!

My ds potty trained when I told him the shop wouldn't sell me nappies for 3 year olds.

My DD used to withhold urine when we started potty training. In retrospect we left it rather late. She once held it for 24 hours. 111 said A and E in case her bladder ruptures. Of course she wet herself in the waiting room at A and E.

It was an app that said 'potty time!' every 2 hours that finally solved it for us.

would he wee on to a nappy put in the potty?

Soubriquet · 15/08/2018 18:10

We've given up for today...he needed to go for a nap and obviously needed a pull up on for it. Soon as it was on he flooded it.. stubborn moo

I would suggest not putting one on for naps. Just put him down on a load of towels and a puppy training type pad. As he relaxes to go to sleep, he will probably do it but I think he needs that sensation of letting go without a nappy on.

I found potty training one of the most stressful times of parenting though, so you have my sympathy!
