Short version: my purse (containing things to the value of £200) went missing on the same day we had been sent a different cleaner from the agency we use. Manager of the agency vouched for the cleaner and was adamant she was trustworthy. 6 months later I discover this cleaner has been uncovered for stealing from other homes. Should I raise the theft again or leave it?
Detailed version:
We have a regular cleaner employed through a small agency, she's great and I trust her. One day about 6 months ago, another cleaner from the same agency turned up to work alongside our regular cleaner for the day. I think it was to help our cleaner get through her houses quicker because she'd been off sick and needed to catch up.
Anyway, later that day I discovered my purse was missing from my coat pocket. (I also noticed my coat was hanging differently on the peg but thought perhaps it had been knocked off and rehung, not necessarily messed with). Purse contained about £50 cash, £110 gift card, my prepay travel card and driving licence etc.
I texted our regular cleaner if she'd seen my purse anywhere in the house. She hadn't but was very worried about it and contacted the manager of the agency. I was assured by the manager that the other cleaner was very trustworthy and had worked for her for a long time etc. I had to conclude I must have lost my purse when I had gone for a walk that morning.
Yesterday, our regular cleaner told me that the other cleaner had recently been fired for stealing: a household discovered she had been stealing expensive alcohol from them over time.
To me, this makes it very likely it was her who stole my purse. Added to this, I knew from my online account that someone had used my travel card to take the bus twice (before i blocked it). I asked my cleaner yesterday where the other one lived and it is to a part of town on the bus route in question.
So: what would you do? I'm upset that I lost £200 and that the manager vouched for an employee who it turned out was untrustworthy.
OTOH, I still don't have actual proof. And given that the cleaner has been done for stealing alcohol, probably has some wider problems than just dishonesty and I don't want to make things worse.
