Me and DP have been in the very fortunate position to quit our jobs and travel for the last few months. We’re now planning our return home in a month or so’s time.

I enjoyed my old job, I worked with a wonderful team of people and I was paid pretty well. I also got a lot of good benefits with the company, which I would struggle to find elsewhere (good holidays, flexible hours, great pension etc). There were a couple of negatives though, mainly the lack of any realistic progression opportunities. But on the whole, I didn’t enjoy handing in my notice and I left on very good terms.

I have kept in touch with some ex colleagues, and my manager has expressed an interest in getting me back on the team (creative industry). So, I have two options:

  1. Got back to old job. Not challenging but enjoyable, good money, longish commute.
  1. Continue trying to build up my freelance portfolio. At the moment I’m only earning a few hundred £ a month, but could earn more if I tried. Would have the flexibility to work from home but probably wouldn’t earn anywhere near as much as in my old job.

Me and DP are planning to save for a new house over the next year, so I’m tempted by the money (and the familiarity!) of my old job.

On the other hand, now seems like a good opportunity to really give freelancing a go, but I’m not sure whether I’m suited to the constant peaks and troughs.

Would love some opinions!

Is there any chance at all that your old employer would let you work part time, so you could build up your freelancing on the other days?

PJBanana · 14/08/2018 22:42

tectonicplates that would be the perfect situation, but highly unlikely, unfortunately!

Life is an evolution. Remember you old boss freelanced once.
