Hi,

I've been having numerous difficulties with my hair and would appreciate tips and recommendations for products.

  1. It's always greasy

If I wash it in the evening it will be greasy the next morning. If I wash it in the morning greasy next day without fail

I use Dry Shampoo on Day 2 but have to wash it or look a state by Day 3

  1. It's always flyaway

So if I wash my hair and dry it first thing, I'll go about my day quite normally only to spot myself in the mirror and see an actual scarecrow! I literally will look like I last brushed my hair three days ago with loads of hairs escaping away from the flow
It is knotty within seconds of a hint of wind
I want that 'glossy not a hair out of place' look no idea how to do it have got the time and resources to get into a routine with it

I had it up in a pony today thinking "chic"
Reality: Vicky Pollard via a hedge

It always seems flat and lacking in volume

  1. I can't seem to get it the colour I want

Hairdresser is an old friend who has done my hair for years and in many ways I prefer our relaxed catch ups over very reasonably priced appointments to awkward small talk at an overpriced salon

BUT

I never feel she's really done the roots properly (Natural Brunette, Blond Highlights)
and the underside of the hair is always left quite dark

On a fresh wash this looks lovely, particularly if braided, but with the greasiness, it mostly looks cheap and tired

I would ideally like hair similarly to how Amanda Seyfried and Lily James have theirs in Mamma Mia, waves and kinks, but still looking quite groomed and not as I currently look: awaiting my callback from Jeremy Kyle

It's like I have teenage hair but I'm late 30s!

Budget: If it will do what people say it'll do I don't care about cost at this point !

Currently use L'Oréal Elvive Shampoo/Conditioner/Styling

Batiste

Occasionally Lush Shampoo Bars

Do you blow-dry your hair?

I have quite voluminous, slightly wavy hair and blow-drying means it ends up greasy after two - 3 days... (My hair doesn't get greasy that quickly, tbh.)

Something to lift your roots might be the answer?

My roots are occasionally limp/flat. Which means my hair needs to be washed muuch sooner than usual.

I've never used L'Oréal tbh.

I currently use the herbal essences grapefruit shampoo (1-2) a week. I really like it.

Do you use the conditioner "all over" your head?

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 14/08/2018 20:49

I sometimes blow dry and sometimes air dry depending on time and levels of arsed.

Yes I just use conditioner on the ends

Have you got any recommendations for a good root volumizer?

Dry shampoo actually works surprisingly well.
Or curl / volumising mousse. I tend to air dry my hair and then put it up in a bun (or curlers, but just at the roots and I don't use the hot setting on the blow-dryer. The hot air tends to make my head sweaty => greasy hair... Or I rollers in when the hair is dry and spritz a tiny bit of hairspray for hold...)

I tend keep my hair out of my face. (Half up, buns, ponytails etc..)

*Should have clarified. Blow-drying with hot air makes my hair greasy..
But the most important thing for me personally is getting the shampoo right.

Fortunately there are solutions for how to treat oily hair. A dermatologist will help in serious cases –prescribed medications contain all-trans-retinoic acid or ATRA for short (a vitamin A related substance), which regulates the sebaceous gland secretions. However, in most cases special hair care products will make an effective oily hair treatment. These products will restore the balanced production of oily substances from the sebaceous glands. Seaweed or herbs like horsetail, rosemary, coltsfoot, nettles, chamomile and salvia regulate the sebum production and help get rid of oily hair. Medicinal tar shampoos may also regulate the sebum secretion. Please note: Avoid products containing proteins or lipid-replenishing substances such as oils or silicon! They only make a difficult situation worse by weighing the hair down and making it even oilier than before

Schwarzkopf says this about excessively greasy hair. The shampoo I use is silicone free as well so there might be a reason why I like this one so much? Idk.

But idk whether we actually have the same hair texture / hair type... What works for me may be horrible for you.

There's a Bumble and Bumble £20 one that is supposed to be for greasy hair but it's a clarifying shampoo for once a week use. It's called Sunday.

They also do a silicone free one

🤔

If I spend a load of money on Bumble and Bumble and my hair still looks like shite I'll be sooo pissed off 😂

Grin would be as well. It might be a good idea to bite gje bullet and go for a professional consultation?

I'd also ask your stylist whether she could do your roots / do them differently and see what happens...? (You could phrase it as wanting to try "something new").

Hi,
Watching this thread with lots of interest... Have you tried Moroccan oil? I put it on my hair damp, mostly ends and mid sections. I have hair just past my collar bones, some highlights and the long layers can get dry if I don't use the Moroccan oil. It feels like it makes my hair swishier and generally detangled and healthier....
It is spendy - but last ages. I use one pump of the dispenser when I wash my hair most days and a big bottle lasts me most of a year. I think it's around £30 for the big size but sometimes hair salons might have samples and they do sell it in smaller sizes. It is a fab product I feel and wouldn't be without mine.

Pearlton · 14/08/2018 22:09

Sorry forgot to say our hair types sound quite similar from what you mentioned in your first post. Oddly I find the Moroccan oil seems to make my hair more balanced and it doesn't leave it feeling greasy or oily (as you might expect from an oil product) at all! Hope that makes sense now! Smile

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 14/08/2018 22:47

What brand of Moroccan Oil do you use? @Pearlton

I really rate Jason and the Argan Oil Bar from Lush but still the scalp.

Having just rifled through B and B's entire catalogue they have a really interesting scalp product I'm going to try as my greasiness is mostly scalp I'll get the link :

It's called Morrocanoil Light Oil Treatment. It's the Moroccanoil brand with a turquoise label.

happinessischocolate · 15/08/2018 00:38

L'Oréal fiberology thickening shampoo is brilliant at thickening flyaway or thin hair, my dd has stopped using it as her fine blonde hair is now getting too thick. Not sure if you use conditioner but don't as that'll make it greasy use argon oil spray on the ends instead it's available quite cheap in home bargains.
