Is it possible to request print out of blood test results

from your GP surgery (NHS)

Just had a blood test yesterday, my GP called me today to go over the results and said many results were ‘normal’

However, I’d love to see what my exact results were and keep them for my own records. The blood test was for my hormone levels (I have suspected lean pcos) and I’ve heard it’s very common for some women to have “normal” levels of testosterone but it’s considered high for them if that makes sense

Either way, my pcos symptoms are awful - terrible acne and hirsutism and my GP just seemed to gloss over this and say nothing to worry about dear, just try eating less sugar (my fasting blood glucose was 6 - and I don’t eat any refined carbs)
Wish I could try metformin or something but stupidly I felt too nervous to ask all of this on the phone, and instead just said “ok/ok/ok thank you goodbye”

Has anyone asked for a print out of their results from the receptionist? I’m paranoid I’ll come across as a hypochondriac/time waster

Yes I have but had to pay a small admin charge

Yes you should be able to. Ring the surgery and ask to speak to either admin or a secretary, they may charge you a small admin fee.

Yes they should give you a print out.

Do you have online access to your records?
If not, it's worth seeing what your surgery offers in terms of online services as it may be the easiest way to view them in the future.

You definitely should be able to, although since GDPR we have to submit a written request at my practice now.

I have PCOS with "normal" testosterone levels OP, so you're right in thinking that's possible. Luckily I was seeing a private consultant who took no notice of the "normal" result and diagnosed me regardless. I was started on Metformin and a month later was pregnant after almost two years of infertility. I'm 12 weeks now, still taking the Metformin, and touch wood having a healthy pregnancy so far.

There's lots of info out there so make sure you go armed with it to fight your corner with the GP - good luck!

On another note OP, have you heard of myo-inositol? I didn't get a chance to start taking it before I fell pregnant, but it's often raved about on PCOS forums for working wonders to control symptoms.

Yes I had my report print out free of charge

We always ask for a print out of blood test results.

Hi, you need to ask your surgery for "online access to your detailed coded record" (use these exact words) which will allow you to see your test results online.
They'll probably ask you to sign a form, and check your ID, but you'll then be able to see all the test results and the details of them, e.g. haemoglobin level for your full blood count - and you'll see whether it's in the "normal" range.
Do ask for them to allow "free text" when you ask for extended access, then you'll be able to see what the doctor has commented - this is really useful because an abnormal result could be 'normal' for you.

maraudersmap yes I have, funnily enough just started taking it today (didn’t want to start before blood test) - hoping it can help! Congrats on the pregnancy x

Thanks all! I was quite lucky as the receptionist happily did it for free, no questions ask phew 😅

Also, I’m pretty sure my oestadiol levels were low but my GP ignored it. They were 99 pmol/L and I had the test during the (supposedly) ovulating phase of my cycle

I think so. My gp gave me mine when they tested for hormones / menopause. Obviously I've forgotten where I put them so never managed to go through it in detail Blush.
