eBay offer, what do I do?

I haven't sold on EBay for years, so what do I do??

Item went on yesterday for a week, with starting bid of £40. Offer has been made for 'buy now' I assume, for £35. So this person hasn't bid, he's asking if he can just have it and take it off sale? As I say, haven't sold on EBay for years and this is new to me!

either
a) ignore
b) send a message saying thanks for the offer but I'm happy to let the auction run its course
c) send a message accepting the offer

MaureenMLove · 14/08/2018 16:09

Ok, sorry I sound a bit dim, but it's all new! Do people do this now? Chance their arm on a buy it now, even if it's not listed like that?

I'm going to say, thanks but no thanks. It's worth far more than that, going on similar items on there.

He's desperate for a cheap deal I think. He's sent me another offer of £45.

I'm going to leave him for a while I think.

yeah, reasonably common. I've done a lot of ebaying - I usually just do b) but have on occasion accepted an offer if I think it's a fair one and if I'm confident that it is a reliable buyer.

foxyliz26 · 14/08/2018 16:46

leave him sweat ! send him a personal message , would be like to view the item ?

all the while leaving it up on the auction site , this will focus his attention, who knows he might make a good offer for cash

and sometime items can get broken , before they finish , meaning you might have to end the listing

keepingbees · 14/08/2018 16:51

I think it's quite common for people to ask if you'll do a buy it now. They either want it quickly or they don't want to risk losing it by being outbid. I rather buy on buy it nows personally as I hate watching something for a week only to lose out at the last moment.
If it's the price you want then it can work in both your favours if you want a quick sale. If you think you could get a better price on auction then hold out for that and just tell him sorry it's auction only.

Pinkvoid · 14/08/2018 17:03

Really annoying but common occurrence on eBay. I ended up writing “no buy it now offers, will wait for auction to end-thanks” in the items description.

MaureenMLove · 14/08/2018 17:14

OK, I'll bow to all your expert knowledge.

The thing I'm selling is chicken guard! I have no idea what so ever what it is, but it was sent to me in error at Christmas last year! Seller was supposed to send me a chicken candle (don't ask!!). I called her up, she said I'll send you the candle, but just keep the chicken guard!

I think it's worth over £100, but not knowing what the hell it is or does, I'm not that sure!!

Have a look at completed items and see what they sold for. Will give you a good idea on price

MaureenMLove · 14/08/2018 17:33

I definitely need an offer nearer £100 I think.

It’s a new option on eBay, I think they’ve cottoned on to the fact that people do it anyway so decided it’s easier to regulate

PeonyTruffle · 14/08/2018 17:41

I had a look and I think you need to remove the 'best offer' option from your listing. That basically invites people to offer you a price which is why he's trying it on

(Sorry I'm not a stalker I promise!)

MaureenMLove · 14/08/2018 17:44

Oh thanks!! I didn't realise there was a best offer on it! I did loads last night and was getting a bit bored of describing things. I'll do that now.

Thank youSmile

eBay now sneaks that best offer option on unless you happen to notice it and untick the box. A best offer should come through as an actual offer though and not a message.

Deafdeafdeath · 14/08/2018 21:30

eBay have started automatically adding on best offer to listings so I have found myself inundated with cheeky offers. Like beyond ridiculous offers - an item starting at £150 getting offered £60. It’s incredhbly annoying and despite me not selecting best offer it seems to come up anyway.

Good luck!

MaureenMLove · 14/08/2018 22:53

Can't seem to get it off. Never mind. I've just declined without comment this time. It's almost intimidating. Not sure I like it!

I've got so much stuff to sell, I've run out of free listings, so I'm getting another pile together for scheduled selling in September. It's terribly cleansing, getting rid of all the tat I've had laying around for so long. This is my Christmas fund! Grin.

AlfieandAnnieRose · 14/08/2018 22:57

Yes you can only remove the best offer if you end the listing and start a new one. You don’t have to rewrite it all just edit it

IStillDrinkCava · 14/08/2018 23:11

Don't be intimidated. I just say no thanks, I'm happy to let the auction run. I've never once had any grief.

I'm impressed by your industry. I find all the weighing, packaging and sending such a faff.
