Making own bed in hotels? have I got it wrong?

I am staying in a good hotel in USA. Cost per night is around 170 £. I always keep the room tidy and, although I don't make the bed, I smooth the covers and generally leave it looking tidy. Today I returned to the room in the early evening and the only thing that had been done was the towels had been replaced and the bin emptied. The glass I have been using for drinking water hadn't been replaced, the bed was exactly as I'd left it. I spoke to the reception staff who checked with the cleaner, who said that she didn't know that I wanted the bed made. I was a bit taken aback as I thought that was the standard in this type of hotels. Also, the first two days they did it without me asking especially! so, I guess I'm asking if I should be making my own bed or if I've been wrong all my life thinking that you can expect a full room service in expensive hotels ...

Why wouldn't they make the bed? Premier Inn do and they're a quarter of the price Confused

I've stayed in hotels all over the place. Some medium-ish expensive, some cheap. Never had my bed not made!

I actually can't stand the way they make beds in hotels. I need to be able to kick around and free my legs. Which means I have to untuck the duvet before I get into bed, which means the bottom sheet get pulled out with the duvet and I have to tuck it all in again. First world problems, and probably another thread though...

Tinywhale I flip the duvet over multiple times a night which I can't do when the corners are tied turned down Angry

Makes me Angry as well SneakyGremlins. Who wants to be pinned into their bed by a duvet?!

SneakyGremlins · 14/08/2018 01:44

Especially in summer!

YANBU OP. I live in the USA and regardless of standard of hotel, never not had the bed made. Even in the cheapest roadside motels. I leave the room tidy anyway and throw the covers over but I always come back to fresh towels, sparkling bathroom, empty bins, refreshed toiletries, water, coffee etc AND a made bed.

I've stayed in a ten pound a night room (which included breakfast Confused)
and had a hole in one of the walls and they still made my bed!

Thanks all. So glad I'm not wrong, all of a sudden I was wondering if I have been impolite towards hotel cleaners all my life!

Oh I love the tight hotel bed!

But no, OP, it's not you. It wasn't just the bed, was it, they didn't give you a clean glass either

Pinkcadillac · 14/08/2018 02:26

I have just seen a notice in the bathroom with the usual message about the environment and leaving the towels on the floor if you want them changed, and it also says that they only change the linen every 3 days unless requested otherwise. But still they should make the bed I think!

I used to date a guy who worked for a well known hotel chain. He said if you only stayed one night then they didn't bother changing the sheets Envy

MyDirtyLittleSecret · 14/08/2018 03:37

Many hotels don't change the sheets nightly any more or put in fresh towels if you don't put them in the bath for environmental reasons, but they still clean the room and make the bed!

tectonicplates · 14/08/2018 05:59

OP I wonder if you confused the cleaner by smoothing the covers down. Maybe you inadvertently gave off a message of "I don't like the way you made my bed, so I've made it myself" type of thing. That's all I can come up with.

ADuckNamedSplash · 14/08/2018 19:35

Have you been leaving tips for the cleaners every day? I understand that's the done thing in hotels in the US. Just thinking that if you haven't been doing this, maybe they've been doing the bare minimum service as a result?
