DH just found this in our bathtubShock It's seriously huge! Sudocrem tub for scale - small tub, but the spider is huge nonetheless!

Hate to inform you we are in the Midlands, not Australia...

Any idea what type of spider this is???

I think spiders are incredible creatures and their webs are things of beauty. I think I’d enjoy the friendly spider programme.

FurryDice · 14/08/2018 19:48

I only evict if they’re so big they scare the cat.

NynaeveSedai · 14/08/2018 19:51

If they are native species they won't die outside. They will find a crevice or a shed or something.

RustyBear · 14/08/2018 19:54

I cam home this afternoon after a couple of days away to one of about that size in the sink. It was relocated to the shed There are far more insects there than inside the house

Readyforapummelling · 14/08/2018 21:04

This is my new pet Walter. He eats the flies so he gets to live rent free.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/08/2018 21:18

Having been through 2, no 3, "Free of Fear" type classes I can only say that that is a common or garden house spider and I would have screamed and run.

At a few weeks off 53 years old I hoovered my first spider last week - off a ceiling!!!!!!!!!... an A Grade effort that the last Psychobabble Practitioner thought was marvellous progress. OK, the brilliant bloke (educator not the hypnotist) at Bristol Zoo "Living with Spiders" thought it was an improvement and asked, not demanded, that I considered the glass and paper technique should the next spider be considerate enough to be on a low and flat surface!

I should have told him I abandoned the hoover where it fell, DH had to deal with it when he got home, about 3 days later Smile But hey, progress is progress.

I suppose my point is that asking 'why kill them?' isn't actually all that useful a question... especially when killing one is a big behaviour change in itself. The only answer you'll get is "It was either the fucking spider or me / the house" and you won't find that logical either!

NoDressSense · 14/08/2018 21:24

My 8 year old had to catch this and remove it for me this week . This is the second one in a few weeks . I thought they didn't come out till later in the year 😩

Spider season always starts mid August!

FreddyFasbear · 15/08/2018 00:39

I don’t mind them in the house. What I DO mind is that they always end up on me. I’ve had the giant house spider sat on my shoulder ( we scared the living shit out of each other ) I’ve had a medium sized one sat on my hand WHILE I WAS DRIVING and another run up my sleeve while driving, and very recently something bit me on the leg. Lifted my dressing gown to find, yep, a fucking spider Hmm . That took ages to heal! If they keep intruding upon my person, I’m buying fucking poison ☠️ 🤨

froufroulala · 15/08/2018 00:51

FlibbertyGiblets I really laughed at your reply Grin

MarthaArthur · 15/08/2018 00:56

As pp said thats a generic house spider. Its also pretty small. Its really not large for a spider at all. Just leave it there he will be gone never to be seen again by morning.

dippyeggsandsoldiers · 15/08/2018 00:56

I bought a spider catcher for this exact reason, my house was taken over by huge spiders!

I catch them and realise into the garden, as much as I'm terrified I could never kill one!

£7.99 from Aldi - best £7.99 I've ever spent Grin

MarthaArthur · 15/08/2018 00:59

I carried one out last week in my hand into the garden near the shed and released it. When i got back inside he was happily sat on my leg and scurried off back into my house. I had to admire his determination and let him live with me.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 15/08/2018 03:18

I second the spider catcher for anyone with a phobia. It is a marvellous thing and ensures you can keep them at arms length. I use mine all the time, it's brilliant.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/08/2018 06:55

What? The box with the handy "Run up it and in yer face" spider highway attached!

Not. on. your. nelly!

QuackPorridgeBacon · 15/08/2018 10:28

I don’t have a spider catcher. I’m teaching myself to ignore that they’re there. I used to be a throw a book on them and hope it’s dead type but I’m trying not to be so murderous these days. I worry that with a spider catcher it’s just going to crawl out and up the stick, terrifying.
