12 DC bitten by dog - does he need tetanus or other medical attention

Ds 12 was bitten on the leg today by a dog. Skin is bruised and there is a puncture wound we've cleaned with antispectic but should he be seen by a doctor and will he need a tetanus? Last record of having a tetanus was when he was 3.
Thanks in advance.

Yes. A&E. May need tetanus booster and antibiotics. Dogs mouths are full of bacteria, and puncture wounds can be deeper than you think, driving bacteria deep below the surface with little bleeding to flush stuff out. .

Yes he does need medical attention and dog attack needs reporting, how did it happen.

DramaAlpaca · 13/08/2018 23:12

I'd get that checked out as there's a puncture wound. I wouldn't rush to A&E as it doesn't sound like an emergency, but I'd see the GP if you can get an appointment soon or call the NHS helpline (sorry, I'm not in the UK so not sure what the number is - 111?)

Flush the wound thoroughly with water. Tetanus not necessary really because no tetanus bugs in a dog mouth, but won't do any harm since he's probably due a booster. Sell medical attention tomorrow if the wound becomes red, swollen and increasingly painful.

*seek medical attention

We walked to a friend's house and their dog walked up the drive towards us, Dc went to stroke him and he bit him on the inside of his thigh. We know they have big dogs and studiedly just didn't think about him when wandered up the drive unannounced. Owner is mortified and said he understands if we want to report it but blame ourselves not the dog or owner so don't think he poses a risk to anyone (unless they also climb over the fence and don't ring the buzzer first!).
Thanks for the advice will ring for a doctors appointment in the morning as I don't feel it's an A&E situation.
