How do I make a wardrobe with no doors more attractive?

So I’m moving into a furnished flat next week (renting) and in the bedroom there’s a big wardrobe which is basically a rail on a stand with a plank of wood underneath and at each end - no doors. It made the whole room look quite messy with all the clothes on show - though that’s just my opinion and apologies to those who like the open wardrobe style!

Has anyone successfully fitted a curtain or similar to cover an open wardrobe? I’ll have to talk to the landlord to see if he’s happy for me to change it, but just looking for ideas on how I could spruce it up a bit! The room is quite small so want it to stay as clutter free as possible.

Thank you!

Could you get a room divider? That might not be what I'm thinking of Hmm, you know those things people get dressed behind, kind of like 3 folding panels?

Paie · 13/08/2018 20:34

Had this problem before.
Bought scraps of sheer fabric from fabric bins, layered on top of each other to create a curtain style cover

We have curtains over our wardrobe- it works really well! There’s a curtain rail/track thing that goes into the ceiling and then get curtains that reach the floor.

Could you put an eyelet screw into each upright bit of wood, and stretch a string between them. Then use that as a curtain rail for a light voile/curtain to act as a door?

Claw001 · 13/08/2018 20:38

I have this, very cheap!

Make a curtain for it. Get an eyelet style one and a telescopic (shower) curtain rail. It will look like a changing room. Cool.

We got some panel curtains from Ikea - basically stiff fabric sliding doors. Bit of a faff to put up though. They're called VATTENAX on the Ikea website and they do various colours.

Buy good quality heavy duty command hooks (they won't leave marks in the walls) and hang up one of those thin wire curtain rails and a voile curtain.

Arghhh! We have lived with no wardrobe doors for nearly 10 years Grin
Dp ripped them off the day we moved in because they are built in to the recesses either side of the fireplace but so they were flush with the front of it if that makes sense. There were just some hooks on the back of the wall to hang a few hangers from because the space is too shallow to hang from a rail (does this make sense?! It was utterly bizarre and I have no idea how the people who lived here before managed with a couple of hooks and nothing else).
So he ripped off the doors and put up a rail so the hangers now stick out but at least did the job.
Although things get dusty Hmm
Dp is a builder and doesn’t believe in spending money on half jobs and our bedroom is the last thing to do in the house and our next job. I can’t bloody wait to have proper wardrobes I can just shut the doors on.
Good luck in your quest Smile

Chuck out all your clothes and buy a brand new colour coordinated capsule wardrobe, hang on wooden hangers in height order Grin

This bamboo free-standing screen is £85

ImNotAsGreenasImCabbageLooking That would be nice, but I’m trying to save space and I’m not sure there’s room!

I should say that neither I nor DP are remotely handy people 😂 I’m having to google the different screws you guys are mentioning. I think a curtain type thing seems to be the way to go....

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 13/08/2018 21:28

Or just buy all new clothes that are all one colour! Grin

Pinkandproud · 13/08/2018 22:48

Ok well obviously I would LOVE to buy a whole new colour coordinated wardrobe....how to go about convincing DP this is a necessary expenditure?

Arrange your clothes in colour order. Always looks better and easier to find what you want.

I am such a nerd.

Pinkandproud · 14/08/2018 11:51

But my clothes are currently arranged by clothing type so I know where to find things Shock Tops, work clothes, casual dresses, formal dresses..

We don’t have wardrobes, just rails. Like a pp, they are in colour order (then according to shade) so it looks quite neat. And it means I don’t hang onto stuff I don’t like cos it isn’t hidden away.

Pinkandproud · 14/08/2018 16:55

dangermouseisace That’s probably a fairly good strategy! maybe I could keep my summer dresses/winter elsewhere as appropriate and then only leave out what I need. Argh.

Anyone know where I could get material from if I did make curtains? I can sew a little bit so would like to make them nicely if I can.

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 14/08/2018 19:25

Arrange them by type otherwise you will be looking through a lot of very similar coloured clothes. By all means, arrange similar colour garments together if they are of the same type.

callkiki · 14/08/2018 19:53

Don't know size of wardrobe, but you can get tension rods and put up curtains or if crafty, can make covers that go over your wardrobe. Neither pic is my fave pattern/colors but a couple ideas. Go to Pinterest for lots of ideas to go with your budget or skill level.

You can get lots of lovely material off Ebay and I buy vintage curtains or bedding for craft items and you get so much more for your money than just buying material by the yard.

If you don't want to put up a proper load bearing rail - Ikea always used to do long lightweight curtains which you could hem to size. V cheap but if the colours works and it covers the wardrobe it may look OK. light Some are sheer but with enough fabric will hide the colours within. light enough that an eyelet screw etc arrangement would work. Proper curtains will need a more sturdy rail. Good luck
