In John Lewis this morning.......

And heard an ominous loud crash. Everything went quiet for a second, and I turned to see an aghast middle aged lady staring down at a smashed mess of glass - looked quite a lot. Within seconds, staff were there and were sweeping it all up. I heard her say " Can I pay you?" and the staff replied " No, no, please don't worry." Would that happen anywhere else? Not sure. Another reason, for me, anyway, to love JL!

Wondering why it's relevant if she's middle aged or not! John Lewis is the best though. :)

God, the poor woman. That’s my biggest nightmare Shock

Clawdy · 13/08/2018 19:22

OK, guess it's not relevant! She just looked so frightened, and reminded me of my mum at that age.

Ok, not as serious but in b&m I forgot I am the size of an elephant and carry a backpack and I smashed over a tall stand of kinder eggs.

Small children cried (well at least my one). A man in a scooter drove straight through it all.

What a freaking mess, I was mortified and ofc offered to pay.

Two shop assistants laughing tidied up and said not to worry over a few (dozen) cracked eggs.

Where else would this happen but b&m?!

Well anywhere that lets me in sadly. Still, I'll not go near the glass in John Lewis. They are doing badly enough as it is.

When I was an impoverished student I went into JL and tried on a skirt. I was rather slimmer at the time but the zip was badly made and came away at the seam when I was in the changing room. It cost about £80 and I started panicking. Took the clothes back to the attendant and said I wasn't taking any, left but was then chased by the staff member calling for security. The security came and a manager who looked at the item and said it was obviously of below par quality, apologised profusely to me and told the attendant to not assume everybody was a criminal. Love JL.

A few years ago when my DS was 3, he smashed a few glass Christmas decorations when he caught the edge of a tree passing it. The staff were lovely & I was happy to pay for the damage but they said it was fine & they would take care of it. They account for accidents to happen. I made sure I spent more than I was intending to try & take away some of the guilt!

They were probably worried they would get in trouble for maybe not using toughened glass or displaying safely?

Hope the customer doesn't feel too shaken. Some displays are outrageous.

parrotonmyshoulder · 13/08/2018 19:34

They weren’t like that in the JL I was in when baby DD managed to grab and drop a cafetière!

misscockerspaniel · 13/08/2018 19:35

A man in a scooter drove straight though it all Grin

In TKMaxx when heavily pregnant I tried to squeeze sideways through the maze of large garden ornaments, quite forgetting that sideways was not a 'slimmer' angle for me at that point! My bump knocked over a huge cement birdbath which smashed loudly everywhere! DH was mortified (as was I) but a bored looking assistant came and swept it up, no mention of us paying for the damage!

glintandglide · 13/08/2018 19:44

Funnily enough almost exactly the same thing happened to me in peter jones (which is John Lewis) it was Xmas and a woman knocked over an entire display of glass and crystal - difference is someone next to me ask if she would need to pay for it and the answer was “she may well have to” Shock not that anyone in their right mind would
