Where to move to in Scotland?

We are likely to move to Scotland in the next year. Primarily my dad is unwell so we want to be closer to my dps, but we also want more space than we can get in London. I partially grew up in Scotland so have a reasonable knowledge of good places, but it’s also based on things from 15 years ago!

Things we need to think about:

  • Needs to be within an hour of Stirling so we can get to my parents easily.
-DH is likely to continue to need to go to London for work semi-regularly so we also need to be closish to an airport or major train station. -Somewhere which is fairly open to outsiders and we are not likely to get any anti-English sentiment. I experienced it growing up, it’s not nice and I really can’t be bothered with having to deal with it. -Family friendly -I think I want small town or rural but still close enough to a bigger city to go to for the day.

We’ve got a fairly healthy budget (thanks to the ridiculous London property market) so we can afford to look in areas that are more expensive, but at the same time I’m fine with areas that get you a lot for your money.

Another West Fifer here Grin I absolutely love it. Burying my head in the sand re schools as my.little ones are very little still.

You've got a good budget but bear in mind anywhere that's commutable to Edinburgh city centre will carry a premium (although it will be easier to sell on). If you dont need to be able to commute regularly to Edinburgh you're in luck.

I dream of being on the water. My.next house HAS to be on the water, preferably with waterfront access. It's the one thing that's missing from my otherwise excellent current house.

Marmaladecats, we did it 20 years ago, no regrets, unfortunately we did it before we bought a house in London, we thought the London property market was getting overheated and our money would be safer invested in Scottish property 😂. We were wrong about that but everything else worked out well!

What about this one:

Kirkliston House, 11 Newliston Road, Kirkliston, EH29 9DY
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65545480.html

This one has been on a while & there could be scope for negotiation on price:
8 Glen Road, Bridge of Allan, Stirling, FK9 4PN
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-64425130.html

This might be above budget but perhaps the location is worth looking at:
Mid Shandon Coldrach Farm Road, Drymen, G63 0EA
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-74174585.html

Maybe Dollar?
Meadowbank, 8 Back Road, Dollar, FK14 7EA
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65433382.html

Or just outside Linlithgow:
The Rowan House, 1 Wyndford Brae, Philpstoun, By Linlithgow, EH49 6RN
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-72710846.html

Stirling:
Chartershall Road, Stirling, Stirlingshire
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-42815610.html

Kinross:
Queens View, Wester Balgedie, Kinross, KY13
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-66103261.html

The Lodge, Burnbrae, Kinross, Perth and Kinross, KY13

Not sure about school catchment for them all though.

What about West Linton?

I've been through a few times and it looks lovely

CormoranStrike · 14/08/2018 22:25

Love that stirling one.

Cant believe nobody has mentioned Kinross area! Fab high school, nice town with some lovely bars and restaurants and walks round the Loch, easy commute to Stirling and Edinburgh too.

I would narrow yourselves down to within 30mins of parents. They might not need daily help now but you don't know if the situation will change in 1, 5 or 10 years time.

Another thing to look at is where the sleeper trains stop. New sleeper trains are being brought out soon. That might be a better option if DH needs to be in London early in the morning rather than catching flights.

villamariavintrapp · 15/08/2018 09:10

Linlithgow or south Queensferry

marmaladecats · 15/08/2018 09:12

That's good to know Wiggly. Ah, the property market...can't be right all the time!

I'm keeping An eye in Edinburgh property for sale but there seems to be a tremendous amount of new builds on the market (not our thing).

Hi everybody,
we would like to move to Scotland too so I found this thread very useful because we would like to move to Stirling or surrounds. If I have to start a new thread please tell me.
The big question is: yes or no due to the Brexit, I read some informations on the Uk Gov website and I think we can try...
I need some informations and I hope you can help me😀
We have twins, they are almoust 4 years old and if I'm right they can start the P1 next year, (if I'm wrong please tell me!!), so I'm trying to find as much info as possible before 2019. It is better to find a town and then a school or start from a school? Is there any offices/websites where I can find info about school, rent a house, and all the things we need to know to stay there? Than you so much, Amelita
