Contraception advice please!

Hi! NC but have been here a while.

Have been taking Cerazette but it's not suited me so have stopped taking. I'm still BFing my 10month old. If we use withdrawal method and no contraception because I'm breast feeding still are chances of another baby very slim? Have booked in with doctors to discuss but appointment is she's away.

Thanks

Seriously?!

Having unprotected sex is a pretty good way of getting pregnant. Withdrawal combined with breast feeding isn't a form of contraception!

Are you mad?!

Breastfeeding isn’t nearly as good a contraception as people think it is, and you can get pregnant using withdrawal method. Use a condom? I’m happily using Natural Cycles with condoms on red days and I’d recommend it if you want to avoid hormonal contraceptives, but I’d be concerned about getting accurate BBT readings if you’re sleeping badly with a young baby.

Having another baby wouldn't be a bad thing, we aren't actively trying at the moment but will be again in the next 12 months. I was told by a doctor after DD was born that whilst breast feeding chances of conception were slim, so that's why I was asking.

No @formerbabe I'm not mad, having another baby will be on the cards for us next year hopefully, but we were waiting until after Xmas. I was asking advice as don't want to wait four weeks for the doctor Blush

Use condoms? Undoubtedly your partner doesn’t want to as they never do on these threads Hmm

Anythingforacatslife · 13/08/2018 18:53

Only if you’re exclusively breastfeeding and since your dc is 10 months I assume there’s some weaning going on?

chachashar · 13/08/2018 18:57

@Anythingforacatslife he eats everything he can get his little hands on.

It can't be relied on for contraception after about age 6 months as solids are introduced and feedings may have decreased

chachashar · 13/08/2018 19:00

Okay thanks all!

FPA info:
Breastfeeding is also known as lactation. It can help to delay when you start ovulating (releasing an egg) and having periods after the birth. This is known as lactational amenorrhoea (LAM) and it can be used as a contraceptive method.

LAM can be up to 98% effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 6 months after the birth.Allof the following conditions must apply:

  • You're fully, or nearly fully, breastfeeding. This means you're only giving your baby breast milk, or you are infrequently giving other liquids in addition to your breast milk.

  • Your baby is less than 6 months old.

  • You haven't had your first period since the birth.

The risk of pregnancy increases ifanyof these conditions apply:

  • You start breastfeeding less often.

  • There are long intervals between feeds – both day and night.

  • You stop night feeds.

  • You use supplement feeding.

  • Your periods return.

Once your baby is over 6 months old the risk of getting pregnant increases, so even if you don’t have periods and are fully or nearly fully breastfeeding, you should use another contraceptive method.

Is there not a women’s health clinic you could go to sooner? We have a walk in one. You migh wait a while, but they can sort you pills out/advise on alternatives x
