Headache on one side of face for 3 days- normal?

It's very painful and radiates from my forehead, to temple, to upper jaw. Ibuprofen is helping a bit. I feel exhausted too. Worth a trip to GP or keep going with painkillers?

I have had the same thing for a week now. It goes away slowly. Not taken anything for it though.

Sounds like some form of migraine to me. Give the GP a call, you may need a slightly stronger painkiller or you may be OK to carry on with what you're taking.

Generally speaking, don't they recommend consulting GP if you need painkillers for more than three days?

Thanks for replies. If it's still bad tomorrow I will ring for an appointment. Going on holiday at the weekend so need it sorted (not flying but abroad).

That might be migraine, but then again it might be something like trigeminal neuralgia. Definitely get it checked out.

welshmist · 13/08/2018 16:22

Might be a dental problem, get it checked out before the holiday though.

Sounds like a migraine. They can last between 3 hours and 3 days and are almost always one sided. You might also have visual or hearing disturbances and nausea though not always. The pain is much worse than an ordinary headache (in my view) and many people feel exhausted for some hours are the migraine finally stops. Definitely worth going to the GP to rule out anything more serious, to try and work out possible triggers so you can avoid it in future and to get medication to shorten the duration of any subsequent migraines, if that's what it is.

LaPufalina · 13/08/2018 16:26

Have you ruled out sinusitis?

rainbowfudgee · 13/08/2018 16:30

I have a sore throat too if that's significant.

The pain is strong aching not zaps or pinching pain. Could be sinusitis I guess. I've had it before but in both sides

Sounds like my migraines but definitely worth getting it checked out! They also knacker me out as I'm constantly fighting the pain and can sleep for 16+ hours sometimes with particularly bad ones Confused
If it is migraine your GP can prescribe triptans to help knock them on the head when they start to come on.

rainbowfudgee · 13/08/2018 16:40

Sorry to drip feed but upper back teeth are sore on that side. Going to pharmacy to get something stronger 😣

With the sore teeth, I'd put my money on a sinus infection.

sillyswimmer · 13/08/2018 20:23

It sounds like a sinus infection. I get them in one side of my face every so often.

rainbowfudgee · 13/08/2018 20:25

Feeling a bit better after a lovely nap and some cocodamol. ..DH has put the kids to bed and cooked dinner! Win.

Do I need antibiotics for a sinus infection or can I just take painkillers at home and avoid the GP?

Are you bringing up any phlegm or got a snotty mucous nose. I'd still see the Dr. If you're going on holiday you don't want it to flare up.

rainbowfudgee · 13/08/2018 20:32

No snot or phlegm at all.

It's up to you whether you see a GP. I don't get on very well with antibiotics so I tend to use decongestants for a couple of days and use steam. There's lots of OTC remedies you can take.
