Any 60 something's can tell me about weight loss

Hi I'm posting for traffic
I'm in my 60s trying to lose a stone in weight and I'm wondering what all you over 60 mumsnetters do to lose the flab. I can't seem to get on with slimming clubs so I try to follow my own plan of healthy eating and trying to eat less. I wonder if it's an age thing as it's it's slower to shift. Also I have a strong bullshit detector so much if the diet-speak puts me right off.
So tell me what works for you. Or have you decided to be fat and happy?

I've rephrased to I want to be fit! I have lost some weight but more importantly I'm toning up. I have health problems so it has been 1 physio led class for the past 2 years but I'm increasing to 2 shortly. Depending on my health I go swimming and walking. My understanding is your level of fitness is more important as the years advance. We've increased our fruit and vegetable intake and add some beans or pulses to most of our meals. I use finely ground red lentils to thicken stews or make gravy. D'H' has lost weight with our dietary changes and is also doing a keep fit programme at the gym which involves a lot of stretching.

I'm 60 and have recently lost just over 2 stone by reducing portion sizes, cutting out snacks, eating loads of veg and doing more exercise. I know that sounds simple, and I am a bit fed up with being hungry, but it is working. (I couldn't bear the thought of any kind of slimming club, or programme - I want this to be a change of habits and thus sustainable)

It is definitely harder to lose weight now than when I was younger, but I have a waistline back again!

FuzzyCustard · 13/08/2018 11:48

Oh, and I am most definitely a lot fitter than I was a few months ago. I can steam up steep hills now and scarcely feel out of breath!

Smaller portion sizes, reduced carbs considerably and upped veg. I had wanted to do Pilates and finally found a class. Now I do Pilates, yoga, Zumba, circuits, dance and toning classes every week.

Ooh -replies!! Thanks.
I'll tell you about my eating and weight. I've faffed about trying various diets and eating plans for the past couple of years or more. I lost about a stone doing low carb high fat a year ago til I got fed up with the rules and restrictions and that I seemed to be constipated all the time, which is no good if I want something that is sustainable long term. I seemed to rebound for the next 9 months and have put it all back on again and tried various no diet type plans as well as intuitive eating. Then 6 weeks ago I got so frustrated by my weight, i thought sod it!! and signed up to Weight Watchers, going against my view that diets don't work, I thought I'll lose the weight and then I can get on with my life. So here I am I'm starting to rebel against the whole WW slimming club ethos again. I've lost 7 lb in 6 weeks and I've been constipated for the past month despite all my usual efforts - again, I can't see it being a way of life. I'm thinking I need to eat less but from a broader range of foods. Eating proper food not diet food. I need to eat for my health and fitness eg IBS etc
There's also a part of me thinks - life is too short to worry and stress about weight, diets and fat but then I look at myself naked and think arrrgh- I've got to shift this blubber.
So what's the answer - is there one??

I decided to get a dog and now feel trimmer due to all our walks. I'm not very overweight but have to watch it now I'm late 60's.

But I eat what I fancy as long as it isn't processed or stodgy, and love oats, lots of fruit and vegetables I snack on nuts and pumpkin/sunflower seeds , a square of dark chocolate or a piece of fruit.

I'm not far off 60 and have just lost nearly 6-stone. I signed up to MyFitnessPal to track calories and went from there. I am on around between 1200 and 1400 calories a day, some days more.

I think a lot of people (not pointing any fingers!) don't get that all 'diet' plans rely on restriction of calories, either through 'syns', 'points', low carb, low fat or any other diet plan.

Simply track calorie intake to take in less than you expend and the weight will come off.

There is no magic in low carb/keto (still relies on calorie restriction despite what so many believe, but more water weight comes off initially) which seems to be the diet of the moment.

My weight loss has taken a good two years and was a matter of plodding on and sticking to calorie restriction as well as I could (easier for the first 18 months).

MFP has a great community with some knowledgeable people who have lost a lot of weight and maintain long-term. Lots to learn from them.

Yoksha · 13/08/2018 14:35

I've replaced breakfast & lunch with protein milkshakes. I've also adopted the ketogenic way of eating. The low to no carbs approach has certainly helped. Weight loss has been steady this past 11wks.

Today I ventured out and made ketogenic tomato soup in my soup maker and 2 thin slices of cheese & 10 cherry toms for lunch instead of the usual shake.

Yoksha · 13/08/2018 14:36

Forgot to say, I'm 62.

idontknowwhattohave · 13/08/2018 17:11

Basically it seems like you're all doing a combination of keeping fit, exercise, eating less and eating healthily with some calorie counting etc. I suppose it's having a positive attitude to yourself and how you look too

Apparently 90 percent of weight loss is down to diet, not exercise. I find I lose motivation if I'm trying to do it on my own. Slimming World's the only one that works for me. I lost 4 stone a couple of years ago, stopped going to SW, put 1.5 stone back on and now back trying to get it off again - 6lbs so far...
